Default [WIP] Magic The Gathering

UPDATE: IT will be posted here and First post.

I am in middle of converting my script to C++ now, One being stuck using a Lua player to run my script is lame, two Lua isn't strong enough to do wat needs to be done. For those that wanted to help and are waiting for my source, just a little bit more time, as Im using notepad++ to convert it over and am having some problems with the commands, im hoping to have it done by this afternoon, 2:30ish central USA, If not no later then tom. Sorry to keep you waiting.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi all,

Im new to the forums, and have a little experience to developing. But I just wanted to say Im currently working on a Magic the Gathering Card game, using Lua (ATM) want to use C++ but gotta continue to learn it. Anyways, this game is going to have Cards from Alpha to 5th edition, for now until i get this more on its feet and be able to get the new rules in. Heres what i have so far.

List and picture of everycard in .png format for lua
Basic yet problematic gui
And some of the basic rules.
As well as deck design. (more along the lines of prebuilt decks.)

My todos
-Add ad-hoc /infrastructure gameplay (if possible)(I have a server already collecting dust so id add the server for this)
-Add More expansion packs past 5th edition
-add all the rules
-allow up to four player games( make L- and R see other players Field to see what they have out on the table)
-Better GUI design
-Better graphics interface
- Possiblity of adding AI (not 100% sure if its possible for card games in Lua to have AI hence why i want to code it in C++)
- Build Custom decks( ATM only got 2 of each expansion prebuilt decks to use from wizard not my own.)

Need help with Graphics for the GUI as well as gameplay via the table board one for 2-player another for 4 player. All credit goes to the ppl.

Any and all suggestions, comments ect. are welcome, flamed or not.

Well if you need help getting the server up and running talk to youresam. He wrote netlib and helped get Sonic Battle Arena online.

Double Post Merge

Actually what would be really cool once you release this is that I could try and mod it to work with Vs System which is the card game I play.

Ah man, Alpha to 5th is kind of boring, I got so used to the fairly new sets

Just to warn you ahead of time - This will be no easy trip. MTG has soooo many rules and exceptions, making it one of the most complex trading card games alive I don't think you'll be able to fully pull off all the rules in there such as stacking, and other in-depth rules, but you could probably do a rough one

If you can accomplish this, props to you

I used to play this... Hope it goes well lol.

Yeah Frozen, you're right. I'd never program a card game, it'd do my head in.

Wow, like the other poster said, it will be difficult to successfully incorperate all of the rules, but if you do, that would be just incredible.

Yeah, I know the rules are going to be a pain thats why im gonna do it till 5th for now since the rules are pretty basic, once i get that mastered ill release expansions that will have all the cards and an updated rules.data with it. As for ZereoX or anyone else for that matter if you want to help id fully accept it and it can become a team effort to get it out. Also soon im gonna release the Source for the Gui since i need major help with it, but im gonna clean it up a bit and add comments so other ppl can understand it

^^ No worries its only in alpha atm once i figure out how to get all the variables correct for the rules. Ill focus on getting more expansions out, and since almost every expansion has new rules or stuff added to the game, it will take a while. Im half tempted to have someone to fully take over the GUI while I take over the gameplay portion otyherwies Id have a release if the GUI didn't freeze. Ill be back later, Gotta take a shower and get back to coding

This should be really good, but you don't need rules.

Apprentice is/was popular (I quit at Fifth Dawn), and it doesn't have any rules. It assumes both players know the rules or will explain them for each other.
Apprentice just lets you put cards in all the appropriate areas. Even a Duress/Coercion type card doesn't let you look at your opponent's hand, they need to click a button to reveal it, you type out your choice, then they move the card into their graveyard.

Also, not having rules allows people to play different/made-up variants, or use handicaps.

And best of all, not having rules means you don't have to program any.

Help files and glossaries would be nice, though.

The hard part would be the card graphics as well as copyright issues.
MtG can all all be boiled down to straight-and-simple MATH and LOGIC as far as programming the gameplay.

Some one woke up from hibernation? I havent seen you post here since around post 100 of the C/C++ help thread...

On Topic:

For some reason, this inspires me to dig out them ol' Yu-gi-oh cards... Havent seen them since 4 - 5 years ago... I think i tried MtG but too many rules and complications forced me away. ijk might just have to try this if its completed just for the sake of the manual.

Well, to avoid the copyright issues, you would have to create brand-new cards.
Make the cards based off actual QJ.net forum members and actual events that have happened over time in the 'scene' and these forums.

nice idea like a card that stops eveything (2.6) then a card can stop that ( kernel) and homebrew type cards get a boost

LOL

As for your guys offering help, Im almost done cleaning the script with comments and crap. When i first learned this I had no clue about making comments which makes it difficult for me to go through it. Honestly i never read help forums on Lua till yesturday morning before I posted this. I taught myself how to use this by experimenting with the given cmds i found of the lua website.

As for the piracy, I don't think it really is going to be a big issue, since the cards are virtual items on the psp, and Im not going to make any profit off it, I doubt wizard would have a problem and since Im including a full tutorial with all the rules (via expansion), Wizards might be cool with it since its for tutorial. Also Im going to be adding their logo just for the fact it is there copyrighted stuff.

As for the QJ.net cards I might just add a card editor in the mix but im not gonna work on that atm, rather have the program working. But Ill add it to my todo list.

And last but not least the Apprentice program, I originally wanted to just port that over ( i might still for ppl taht want to do their own custom gameplay, so they aren't restricted to the rules all the time), but decided to make a new one for ppl that has never played and can get down the rules because they will be enforced, unless you use the appretice port, how i will be able to add that i have no clue. C++ is looking much better for this project ><.

Now, to my main post I was thinking about this project in my sleep last night lol and got some ideas and wanted to share them.

-Since i want to Put infrastucture up to four players, I want them to be able to chat, any good codes in lua (or C++)for keyboard writing or am i stuck with the crappy sony one?
-Just start converting this over to C++ for better results and possiblities
-Has the socom headset been utilized in homebrew yet? If so how do i use it so i can just have voice chat on the server instead of text chat(which means adding stuff to the gamefield, like a little notfication pop-up or sumthing.)

Also Honestly if anyone has a suggestion for the lanuage i should program this in, Its LUA ATM, I know Lua, VB (doubt that works on the PSP), as well as partial C++ (still learning )

if you are looking for a text input system, danzeff is the best one - it is awesome, and is one of the main reasons that i prefer to use links2 over the xmb browser...

very true the size of the pics is gonna be a lot so for now im just gonna do a basic border image with no art taht way its pretty standard i mean today i just downloaded everysingle card for magic workstation and its about 340 MB way to much for my sake, unless i make a PC portion to where you edit your decks on the PC then just transfer it over then i could have the pics for just those decks no images of unused cards but then thats tons more to load over the wifi for internet to transfer pics back and fourth so i gotta find a smaller format, but also the pic i downloaded where the size of the psp screen so the little thumb nails won't be huge. Im not sure but after taht massive DL i decided that the pictures wouldn't be a good thing atm to add. Not until a 2 gig stick is like 40 bucks then i know pretty much the majority will own one.
