PSPs dont have 802.11g, they have 802.11b
but because the router has 802.11g, it also has 802.11b and 802.11a
so thats the only reason a psp can connect to an 802.11g router
but it'll only have 802.11b speeds

a speed up? wtf is that? your psp wifi card is a B it can accept G protocoll, but it wont have G speeds. read phalanx's post

oh wait now i get what you want.

you want to hack the B so it can accept G speeds.

well you cant do that...its not something you can edit, its the actual hardware...ud have to replace the wifi card with a G one.

example

Memory Sticks come in differnt sizes.
32,128,512,1Bg,etc

Now what your saying is this.

"i have a 100 Mb video file"

"i want to hack my 32 MB memory stick so that I can fit a 100 MB video file on it!"

Well as you can conclude by using your common sense is that it wont work.

Positive. It's simple networking. If your router doesn't support the 802.11b protocol, you can't connect.

I believe that is in the spec for 802.11G, that it MUST be backwards compatible with B products. Nothing to do with the PSPs chipset, all 802.11B chipsets will be able to connect to G access points.

The router I use has a setting so it can be used with both B and G standards, or just G. If you can set yours just to work with G standard your PSP shouldn't be able to connect.

If the PSP was able to run at 54mbps (G standard) I'm sure Sony would have been shouting about it before it was launched. Although, that is just an assumption.

All G hardware is compatible with all B hardware. But the actual speed you are running will be the speed of the slower device. So if you have a G router and with a B device, it will run at B speed. If you have a B router with a G Device it will run at B speed.

It doesn't matter how fast your wireless is.
Once it hits the modem to go out on the internet, it's slowing the **** down to whatever speed you're paying for, i.e. 1Mbps, 768Kbps, etc.

No, it won't YOUR ROUTER MUST SUPPORT THE 802.11b PROTOCOL. If it only supports G, YOU CANNOT CONNECT. I am CCNA1-4 certified, I'm pretty damn ****ing sure I know what I'm talking about. You can't force the PSP to communicate on another protocol at a slower speed. That's like saying that a man knows German and English and his friend knows only English, but if he speaks german really slow hs friend will be able to understand him.

This should be locked. We have proven that the PSP uses 802.11b, not 802.11g. So really and truly, this thread has no purpose left.

except streaming video from your computer and other stuff
but even so, 802.11b is fast enough

@soccerPMN: Yes, it's faster. But that doesn't mean that the PSP can communicate with it. And you can't just "get" certified.

You said to get it to communicate on another protocol at a slower speed. And I was just kidding, no way in hell do I want to be certified like that.

Yes, I know I did. I was saying it because of this reply, namely the bolded text:

And really an truly, his second comment is incorrect as well. The wireless device would need to support the 802.11b protocol in addition to the 802.11g protocol to be able to communicate with a Wireless B router.

Last I remember all the routers i've seen that are G protocol support the B protocol as well. So if you had mixture of G & B hardware they would work fine together.

WTF, are you on crack. A device doesn't need both G & B to work on a B router. It would only need B at least. If that was the case then the psp wouldn't work on a B router.

The 802.11b protocol has a maximum bandwith of 11mbit/s and 802.11g 54mbit/s! For example, if you configure your network router to use b/g protocol combo then it will work only at 11mbit/s speed and NOT faster because of the wifi card in psp which cannot support faster speeds as it is limited by its hardware capabilities..

I'm guessing the main reason Sony didn't install a "G" type wifi card in the PSP console is to conserve battery life (same thing they've done limiting the processor speed from 333Mhz to 222Mhz)

Thats because they claim its eg. 10mb, people think thats 10 megabyte download, but its megabit... which is 1.25megabyte, so once it goes externally it is slowed down from whatever you have internally (10/100/1000).

Internally, you can go as fast as your switch and cards let you :P

psp works only with 802.11b
or 802.11g if you use kai and psp is the server of the net ad hoc.
