It depends on the specs of your PC. If I were you, I would do it while I'm sleeping.

Yeah, but you only do it once. You could always try LUA. Download my program that teaches you LUA. It's called ProgramLUA.

I know you get more possibilites, but if he's having a hard time installing Cygwin, or he is a beginner programmer, I suggest LUA. I installed Cygwin 3 times and none of the installations worked. That's why I went to LUA. I'm learning C now though.

I went to the university with my 40 GB external usb hard drive and used their connection to install cygwin. I set it up locally on drive H: and the set-up took about 5 or 6 hours. It was a 3.2 Ghz Pentium 4, 1 GB of RAM, Win XP Pro. I took it home to my new PC, which also runs a version of Win XP, copied the usb drive contents to my local harddrive, edited the cygwin batch to have the right drive letters (C: instead of H, and then it has been working since then. I started to try installing it on my old Compaq Presario with Redhat 9 on it, but with dial-up and 300 Mhz Celeron, that would be just plain silly.

The last time I tried to re-partition my harddrive, I was unable to boot into Windows. The next time I try a Linux distro, it better have a repartitioning tool come with the installer. I heard Suse has that but I'm not sure.

Put it this way.

The lengthivity of the installation,

Seperates the Dev's from those who try.

If you don't have the dedication, and/or patience to wait 3 hours, i doubt you will be a reliable dev... <_<

It's not that long, i didnt even do it over night, i just minimized it, and chat to people for 3 hours, not hard..

Ditto. I installed the toolchain on Linux. For my installation all I had to do was type three commands and wait like less than an hour for it to finish compiling.

Good, I hope that means I'll be a great dev since I sat in a freezing computer lab for 5 hours with nothing to do except browse the internet a little and freeze. I couldn't just leave my 40 GB lying around.
