Hi Guys,
I'm committed to making a mic attachment for my PSP so I can try lteixeira's sample programs, and try modding them myself. The microphone attachment is going to be very SEXY, so I might as well document it so others can have a go. I have not done anything more than what I post at the time I post it. This is live! ![]() Pictured is the Bill Of Material! These are approximated prices, I purchased all of this stuff today, so I have a good idea of the prices: A wired Nokia Boom mic ($20 Big W, Australia). Ipod Video adapter ($5 Big W, Australia). Various size heatshrink tubing ($16 for what is pictured **** Smith Electronics, Aus). The heatshrink tubing is required if the result is to look anything as SEXY as my Headphone Remote Mod. You will notice my photo is a rip off of the RACIST Sony add! Yes, it could have gone in hacks where noone would see it. Something like this is going to be required for anyone who wants to use audio in without buying a Socom headset. Cheers, Art. |

The 2.5mm 4 pin plug on the Nokia Boom headset is wired like this:
http://pinouts.ru/images/nokia_3210_handsfree.gif It doesn't matter because we are going to cut it off. Knowing the pinout might help determine which wires are which once you cut it though. I was left with four colours: Green Red Green/Clear striped Clear (copper) These are connected to the Nokia connector in the order listed from tip to plug base, so going by that diagram, we have the wiring of the mic and earphone down to wire colours. It is time to throw away the Nokia plug we cut off. Green = Earphone + Red = Mic + Green/Clear Striped = Earphone - Clear = Mic - Tin the individual wires with a 60 Watt soldering iron. You wouldn't normally use such a beast for fine soldering, but it's just for melting the coating so we can tin the wires. If you use a lighter, knife, or any other method to strip the wires, you will mess it up, and end up with DOG WIRING as seen in the right picture (I did it as an example with the plug end that I'm throwing away). The example on the left I did not strip the wires first, just tin them straight with a 60 watt iron. Now put the 60 watt iron back in the garage for WORKING ON CARS where it usualy belongs. |

Now the wiring of the Ipod Video plug is discovered.
It is like the Sony convention where video is used where the mic is connected. The rest is wired the same as a standard 3.5 mm stereo plug. If you can't see the diagram in the picture, White - tip Red Bare/Shield Yellow - base These wires can be stripped normally, and can be tinned with a 15 - 20 watt soldering iron. |

It must be decided what wires to join.
Thhis is where we will do that, but first, it must be decided what heatshrink sizes, and lengths to use, since much of the heatshrink will have to be threaded before the joins are made. Only the larger heatshrink will fit over the plug once the wires are joined, but several layers of different sizes will be needed for the transition from thicker to thinner cable for each end we are joining. We are only connecting a mono earphone, so we can join left and right audio together so we still get a full mono signal, and will hear sounds that may come out of either PSP channel. At the headset end we join the clear wire to the green stripe wire. These are both the negatives, and are both connected to the shield of the Ipod video cable. Code:
Ipod Video cable ____________________ Nokia Headset cable White + Red --------------------------- Green Shield ----------------------------------Clear + Green Stripe Yellow ----------------------------------Red Last edited by Art; 09-09-2006 at 05:34 AM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

We're going for quality so joints are individually heatshrinked except
for the least bulky Yellow to Red connection which will still be covered by the outer heatshrink layers. You'll notice the soldering on the single left over bare joint, and how extraordinarily neat my soldering is ![]() We should test with the PSP souns application "Memo Recorder" now that each connection is isolated from each other. Remember to have the remote plugged in for the microphone to work. Last edited by Art; 09-09-2006 at 07:05 AM.. |

Layer two of heatshrink is now applied snugly.
Layer three is visible in the picture, was threaded through the wire before the joint was made like I said before, because it would be almost impossible to thread it over the plug now. Last edited by Art; 09-09-2006 at 06:31 AM.. |

Coz I fell in love with the Nokia one when I went shopping today.
ok, The third layer of heatshrink is quite a bit thincker than the second, so I wrapped a length of solder around the second layer to form a coil that will be held in place by the third layer of heatshrink tubing. This also adds some weight to the plug which may be a positive effect when you are trying to find your remote control. Tadaa! One PSP compatible Nokia headset with biult in mute button. Works like a charm. Art. Last edited by Art; 09-09-2006 at 07:27 AM.. |

Every heard of being able to attach eight images to a single post?
![]() And as I said in the first post, I was making it AS I was posting, since that is the easiest way to keep up with documenting it. ,,,edit,, might as well post the proof, so that's nine photos. It can just be seen that the Headphone, Remote, and Microphone are all reported as connected in the Memo Recorder program (or as least could in the bmp.. it works anyway!). Yes, you could do that, and use the original loop example program on the PSP
to play the sound straight through. The input is only mono though, so the output is only dual mono which would not sound so good for music. |

THere are no mods needed to the original loop example,
it takes audio input, and plays it straight out of the speakers like you want, just that it would end up in mono. It would have been nice to get a stereo input, I'm sure the PSP has the guts to support it, but I suppose a mono input is better than notheing for a game console. |

OK I've done the mod to connect the iPod to the PSP and the memo recorder works fine.. The input is mono the only thing that I've done is connect both channels from the iPod to the single one on the cable that goes into the remote... Yeah it's mono but I'm not missing any channel.. I'll check right now the demo loop you're talkin about... Thanks!

Ever heard of searching?
This has been done before. And your solution costs more than the Sony headset.

and the Socom headset looks very bulky and uncomfortable to me if you intended to use it as a portable voice recorder as I do. and this hasn't quite been done beforew, it's specific to Australia. The PSOne cable is different in Australia, so your choice of plug is narrowed down to the Ipod video cable. |

It's a $5-$10 cable and it's not iPod-specific. I know, I bought one for my iPod and my custom PSP headset solution I did a loooong time ago.

ok ok.. now the very big problem is.. When in loop mode I've to plug the remote and the microphone(line in) to the psp.. so... it plays but not to the built in speakers!! lol I haven't think about that... It is possible to have the remote and microphone connected to the psp and get the built in speakers to sound?? Thanks again!

Lol, I didn't think of that.
The remote must be plugged in, you can't tap the microphone line before the remote because some circuitry for the mic is in the remote. Quote:
I have a list of devices from the net, but some of these are 2.5mm plugs Quote:
It isn't, but it still functions to mute the mic by shorting it. |
