Can you please explain signature check generation for us? Sorry for being ignorant but I just want to know if this is a major advancement or minor.

It's major.
It uses the kirk engine on your PSP to generate SHA-1, then uses it as the headers.

Alex has successfully generated the sha-1 key area on a 2.81 module today.
An updated 2.80 psardumper mod should be released shortly @ http://dax.lan.st/ featuring generation of the key area from your psp, which would allow to devhook 2.8x firmwares (you still need a new devhook version tough)
as well as it would allow to manually flash 2.00+ firmwares into your psp.

Cheers

UPDATE: The new psardumper mod featuring sign check generation has been released.

When the new devhook comes out it will need this to emulate 2.80/2.81.

I have a question, Is it true we can no longer use another PSP's decrypted firmware dump for 2.80/2.81, Because of the new SHA-1 stuff?

To someone who just said if this is the same one as last night, no.
This can now generate the SHA-1 headers using the kirk engine.

Exactly what do the last missing devhook files do? Does it get the directorys of the files? If so, you could change it yourself.

to all who dont understand the SHA-1 thing:

in simple terms:

sony have put a crappy system of making new keys to stop devhook from emulating 2.8/2.81. but, obviously, they have failed again. now, why am i not surprised? next thing you know theyll be like, "everytime u turn ur psp on, ull have to pay 10 cents to use it"

and.. if you dont get that, then an even simlpler version:

Dark_Alex > Sony

simple enough?
