I've noticed that there are very few (if any) homebrew RPGs for the psp out there currently. The way I see it, the reason that there are few RPGs out there is because of the fact that its pretty hard to create an engine for running an RPG, let alone creating all of the content needed for a decent RPG.
I've decided to try and cut the workload in half by making an engine that will provide the backend code needed for an RPG to function correctly. In essence, I plan on this being something similar to the RPG Makers out there for the PC.
This project will utilize xml as a way to store all information related to the content of the RPG. This includes characters, spells, abilities, scene information, and of course quests.
The aim of this project is to allow someone who doesn't possess the coding skills required to make an RPG for the PSP. I plan on doing this by creating a cross platform application that allows for easily editing all the data needed for an RPG to function. It will use a simple drag and drop interface for building scenes, with dialogs for linking scenes together, and creating NPCs. The engine will then be in charge of actually displaying that content on the PSP.
This is still in the early stages of development, but I would like to open this up to the homebrew community in order to get suggestions throughout the development process. This way, users can suggest which features they would like to see, and hopefully get them included in the project.
The engine and the toolkit will both be completely open source, licensed under the GPL. I've created a sourceforge project for it, and set up some forums to allow discussion of the project.
If anyone is interested in providing suggestions along the way, or just wants to stop by and see how things are going, the forums are located at http://psprpg.sourceforge.net/forums/.
If you have questions/suggestions/feedback, I would prefer they be posted on the forums I set up to keep everything in one place for easy access.
