Hey everybody. I've been using QJ for months but never actually registered till now. I'm want to start developing and my first project is going to be a big one (I think). I want to port the game Carnivores 2 to the PSP. I think the system could handle the game easily (10 years old. Maybe more.) If anybody else is interested in helping, or is just interested, please say so. Anyone who knows about the Carnivores series, please tell me if you think it's capable of running this game. The source code for it is availabe from Action Forms via email.

Possible, but unlikely that you could make it. Start aiming low, like 2D graphics.
And spiderjames, I think he could care less who beta tests.

I dont mean to put you down, I'm just telling you the truth. I've spent about 2 years programming on the PSP now, and I'm still no where near a game like that. Sure I do 3D, but it doesnt make that game simple to make.

I'm not saying this is going to be fast. Or easy. Or both. This is something I will be doing over a long period of time. I'm probably going to do other stuff while doing this. I realize I won't be able to just jump in and start coding.

thats gonna be really hard i mean super hard
how aree u going to do the 3d animations and the ai for that! and uve never released anythng before? i dont want to be a neah sayer but i think u shhould aim lower for a first release btw what will this be coded in? |

Plus, if youre just starting C/C++, porting will be super hard for you. Just make a game thats easy like pong or classic game and work your way up.

I said in the first post that this would be made using the source code for the game. The company who now has the rights to the game is happily giving the source code out (or so I've heard). Still waiting for my copy of the source. Have to wait till tomorrow though since it's a business.

I've started HUGE total conversions for the PC game Freelancer before and regretted announcing it, as everyone flamed when I couldn't get some of the most hyped features to work. Take my advice. Start with a 2D game, and work on the core of the game, forget about the purty graphics. If you can get down the health, ammo, and AI systems, then port it (well, as much as possible) to 3D. This way, people will see you have skill and respect you, more people will want to help, there'll be no flaming if you can't continue, and worst case, you can't get the 3D working, you at least have a nice 2D that you can improve on.
That said, I'll beta test ^_^. |

Nice plan. However, agreeing to most of the other people posting here, i can say with my logic that it's not going to be easy to make something like this. Start smaller, and work your way up. I myself still haven't set up cygwin completely, and i also just signed up yesterday. I am going to program something easy, so that i can make my way up. I want to earn developer status and increase my reputation (which is what most people should aim for, if they haven't already).

Like everyone else said. I'd be amazed if a first timer created a game like this. But if you able to, then more power to ya! Do you have any experience at all?
