PSP Programming Tutorials

So, my first post with the code in it was right, but it returned a pointer, not a.mp3 file? Hopefuly someone has a simple explanation. As for that website, I have already been there before, and that is where I startd with this, and here is what Shatterdome gave me in a pm, he said it wrked for him but it didn't work for me:

in tutorial one.....the process that takes a LONG time....i think its running through a script or something...is it taking memory?...any effects to my pc afterwards??

jag, no real effects your PC afterwards. The very worst it does is take a chunk of hard drive space, but you can delete it when you want with no ill effects.

And yes, it is running through a script, compiling and building everything necessary for the PSPSDK.

The worst thing is the wait, trust me =)

Also, to note SG57, I got Shatterdome's source code going. I'll post it once I iron out a few little kinks in it.

It's pretty good, the only real room for improvement I can see is the ability to screen out files other than Mp3...

The problems thus far -

• Doesn't filter out non-Mp3 files, thus they need to be in their own directory with ONLY Mp3 files
• Weird bug where if you skip to the next Mp3 it still plays from the position it was at with the last Mp3 (ie, if you were 20 seconds into Mp3 one, it'll play Mp3 two from 20 seconds)
• Detects the return to previous directory signifier (ie, when you cd in Cygwin/Unix/Linux and it says .. at the start, then lists the files)
• Can't tell that, for example, there are only 4 Mp3s, it will still attempt to play the 5th one, thus crashing

Now, of course this would only be for you cause you have 4 .mp3's in your music folder, but there should be a way where if after reading your music folder, there is a certain amount of .mp3's in that folder, then it'll reset. Or, make the songlist array 200, and have if the mp3 end of stream is true, then re-read the directory again, and if that song was already played, then it'd go to the next song, until all are read, then go back to the first one read

You can fix the last bug by putting some error checking in, ie. if songcounter > maxsongs then songcounter = maxsongs, or even songcounter = 2; (this will load up the 3rd "song" in the playlist array, which is the 1st song, because position 0 and 1 are the . and .. this also fixes the 3rd bug :D)

You could also fix the 1st bug with some error checking, some function to cut off the filename before the extenstion, then test whats left to see if it's mp3...thats alot of work, since my game runs only on 1.5, people should only have mp3s in their music folder :D

The second bug is weird...even when you stop and free the tune then load the new one, it still continues from where you left off....I wonder if that has something to do with how the psp naturally handles music and video....ie if you play a song and stop it, then go look at some pictures, then come back to that song and play it, it will start where you left off as well...

I'm also noticing it doesn't like 192kb mp3s....crashes alot when I am playing them...

That's very very situation specific.

There is a way to do it, all you need to do is return the variable 'maxsongs' from getsonglist, but instead of only posting the source later, I thought I'd post it (as it is working, just has major bugs) so you could have a tinker.

Yeah, or be lazy like me and make max songs a global variable :P

I have tried that code but Im still getting an error printing on the screen when loading, it complied without error by the way, but I do have a folder inside my MUSIC folder that may cause the bug, I'll test it out....

In the mean time, think someone could post/make a whole header with the getsonglist function inside of it with the structures and things in it oo, I would but I'm experimenting with these new readdir functions, and if someone makes them, then it'd clean up alot of peoples code then, cause with this structure thing right at the top, kind of throws off the look of my code :(

SG57 - Instead of clogging up Yeldarb's thread with something not 100% related, I created a new thread for it...

I made void getsonglist an int (ie, int getsonglist) and returned maxsongs from it, so now I call getsonglist by -

approx how much disk space does it take?...how will you know its finished?

My Cygwin install ended up about 400 Meg I believe.

As I said though, it's the wait that kills you. Can't remember how long mate, sorry.

Entering in what? You edit the code in notepad, and simply hit enter to go down to line 2.

lol, haven't heard that one before. But I guess it is possible to get confused and code in the cygwin shell. But you can run code through it. Type:

printf sg57

and it will return sg57.

I suppose you could code it in CYGWIN rather than notepad, but it would be more hassle than it's worth (you'd have to install nano or vi or some other linux command line based text editor)

type "make kxploit" instead of "make" and it will generate files for 1.50

When you have those 2 'kxploited' folders, plug your PSP in with USB mode, then on your computer put those two folders in i(or PSP drive number):/PSP/GAME/ directory. If the root:/PSP/GAME directory isn't there, you can create it.

I agree about doing sooo much work, just for 2 measily words. But, when you start with images and games and stuff, it actually becomes easier if you organize your code right. I have 1 source code with 1 function inside of it, and that is for my main game, another one for my menu, another for debug mode, another for credits, another for options, another for pause menu, etc. It is all nice and clean...

I have done everything in the tutorials(Leson1,2) but cant get the EBOOT to run. I get:
The game could not be started. (80020001). On my psp.

I dont get any errors or warnings when making the eboot. I am running 1.5 on my PSP if that makes a difference.

YOu must have unplugged the USB when transfering or something, that happesn to me someitmes, cause i dont have a 2.0 usb on computer, ti transfers slow, then after 5 secodsn of being done, it transfers a little more, so either just go in cygwin and make kxploit again, and retransfer, or just restart your psp and try again.

Erase the folder you installed it in. And remove any shortcuts manually. I am having problems as well with it.

Harker - easiest way is probably to create a file called Makefile.txt with all your data in it...

Then, go into Cygwin, navigate to that folder using cd, then 'mv Makefile.txt Makefile'

Thanks, that worked! But, I'm trying to run the EBOOT using PSPE, but the program closes a split second after it opens. (I have SDL.dll in the right directory)

PSPE hasn't been updated since some time last year, and even then wasn't ever completely stable or reliable. It never worked for any of the homebrews I made.

Just throw it on your PSP and give it a go there. We've still yet to get a stable PSP Emulator
