I came across these forums (excellent, by the way) while I was looking for ways to downgrade or whatever a PSP slim&lite to the M33 series of custom firmware written by Dark-AleX. This is a relatively new PSP that I got from a friend that doesn't use it much; it's about three months old from purchase. Actually, now that I mention it, I don't actually have it yet, hahaha. I read around these forums and others on how to move to a custom firmware, but a lot of tutorials are often a bit complex even though they're made to be "newbie friendly."
As far as I know and as to what I've gathered from reading around, I'll need a few things:
The PSP slim that I want to hack (with its stock battery)
A PSP that has already been hacked to a custom firmware (PSP phat with its stock battery)
A Pandora battery or other tool-enabled battery (that I plan to purchase)
A magic memory stick (basically a specially formatted flash memory?)
AC adapter (woo US 120v/12A power)
USB adapter (computer to PSP)
Firmwares and other software/GUIs for hacking via internet download
I will have the PSP slim, whose firmware version I will edit into this first post... one of my friends has a hacked PSP phat/fat, but I don't know what firmware he is running (friend's a bit of an idiot, probably hasn't done anything since he paid someone to hack it for him...). I plan to actually buy a factory-made tool battery. I don't want to risk messing up a battery for this, plus the pandora can be used in case I brick, which I really hope doesn't happen. I read around for magic memory sticks, and as far as I know, it's just pro duo memory around 512MB to 4GB that is formatted specially with command lines and other stuff to make it a format to update the firmware in the PSP. Of course, I'll have the AC adapter and all that, plus a stock PSP slim battery... and I can download the firmware and GUIs...
The main reason I ask for help on an actual thread is because I don't want to mess up my PSP, which is amazing (having played a friend's when he came around). One of my other friends also has a problem with his PSP, seeing as its dated so that it messed up UMDs and can't read them or always freezes... I don't want to seem that I am pirating, but I plan to load backups of my UMD games onto my flash memory to; 1) avoid UMD reading troubles, 2) save battery power via less spinning drive time(smaller battery capacity in the slim), 3) practically eliminate load times (yay for 64mb of RAM), and finally 4) preserve UMDs and backups in case of disaster. Plus I want to use all the extra stuff that custom firmware allows, like themes (woo) and other third-party stuffs and software.
Oh, and please note that while I am new to PSP hacking/modding, I have a good knowledge of computer software, aka knowing how to install stuff, move root directories, etc. So don't needlessly over-explain or waste time trying to simplify it past a point if you don't want to. If I don't get it, I'll ask you, and then you can explain. =)
What should I start with? I'll provide more information as I go on.
