Even though ISO talk isint allowed here, i think this doesen't break the rules and is actually a good question. Here's my option:

ISO's and CSO's are a compressed file type like Zip's and Rar's. While the PSP have the ability to run these files, Sony blocks this ability off in their firmwares, making sure you cant run pirated games.

Or just the plain fact that games were never permitted by the firmware to be ran from the memory stick.

Official firmware only allows games to be loaded from UMD
CFW allows iso images to be mounted and played as if it were the actual UMD
This is why earlier versions required an actual UMD to be present in the drive.

Why the hell would homebrew be illegal?

And no, there are actually LAWS about copying games.

Homebrews aren't illegal. It's up to the end user to choose what to do with it.

I understand all the other stuff, digital millenium act and all that. (why copying copyright protected games is illegal) and homebrew is offered with a GPL and GNU licenses that make them legal.
But I'm confused on how Sony set up the demo games if there is code in the firmware that prevents games from being launched from the memory stick.
If the ISO/CSO is an exact copy but compressed, regardless of if that data is known or unknown shouldn't a copy of the original code function like the actual code?
Does the psp actually read from the firmware to check the drive? If so how does Sony's demo games get around that and why hasn't someone cracked that? Don't get me wrong I love my CFW. I'm just curious.

I'm guessing that once you crack the umd and rip it, the digital signature is broken.

They key that demos use would take centuries to crack and even then, how would we apply it ?

I have no clue what you're talking about, but if you're asking why you can't rip a UMD directly and run it from the PSP, there are numerous reasons.

First, the layout of the content on the UMD is completely different from a homebrew/demo app. There is no EBOOT.

Second, there's a flag in the PARAM.SFO file which indicates that the data is only allowed to be run from a disc. You can't modify PARAM.SFO without invalidating the signature.

Third, there are often hard-coded paths in the binaries that point to files on disc0. You can't modify the binaries without invalidating the signature.

Thanks freeplay that is exactly what I was asking. I was under the impression that an ISP was a physical copy (I don't run any ISO/CSO) I know that the cso's are compressed.(which I assumed was like xcopy9 and videos, sense if you could break the copyprotection on the DVD the psp would play it back as long as it was in a recognizable format.
When you say PARAM.SFO are you talking about the file that's in an Eboot like the demo's, or game, or firmware, or all of them?
If I understand correctly, we know that demo's and umd's are filtered differently through the PARAM.SFO?
We assume/know that the binaries point to the memstick for demo's that are signed which is directed by the PARAM.SFO?/ binaries? and the PARAM.SFO when umd's are inserted points to disc0?
And so Custom firmware makers have found a way to validate ISO's without running them through the same way? Or has found a way to sign arbitrary code as valid instead of modifying the original code?
    Is that basicly it?
Is the Demo validated completely different than UMD's? Identified by the PARAM.SFO(signed) in the eboot which is read by the FW PARAM.SFO? and trying to mod that to reflect a Ripped UMD would invalidate that signiture?

freeplay, there is an ebbot on the disc, that is how homebrew was discovered, on wipeout, when people tried random things looking for glitches in the psp system, they found out that the eboot was what games run from

Except you're completely and totally wrong.

How would you browse the files on the disc without being able to run homebrew?

the unpatched version was able to load custom maps, and you had to tell it where you put them, then some person randomly put

    ///disc0//

and got a file that was called eboot
