It's been a terribly long time since I've posted ;p
I realized today that one of my speakers on my fat psp isn't working. For all I know it's been like this for a while--I just caught onto it today. I did however drop it about a foot onto the kitchen floor by accident today, but it appeared to be a short meaningless fall at the time so I paid it no attention. The right speaker is making no noise whatsoever. The left speaker, however, is. I've looked this up on several sites but most of the people who are having this issue have lost sound in both speakers. I've tried what they suggested: putting the headphones in and out of the headphone jack to try and bend back/loosen whatever may be wrong in there, possibly debris or a bent prong, and it's worked for a few people, but I've been doing it for about three minutes and I don't see any improvement. I'm thinking there might be a short, but I don't really know how I would fix it if there was. I've disassembled a PSP before, but I royally screwed myself that time and vowed never to do it again. Since then I've grown a little more comfortable with the thought, but as the speaker appears a little more difficult to get to than what I was previously aiming for in my last disassembly attempt, I'm not so confident. Anyone have any good ideas as to what I should attempt?

Well, I would let it be. Having one speaker gone just wouldn't bug me. I wouldn't take it apart, and if it has (most likely) taken you awhile to discover this, like you said, then it probably doesn't bug you. Buts that me. You want to fix it. I have taken my PSP apart once to do the USB Charge mod, which works beautifully, and my laptop to do even more severe soldering work, without any prior experience. I don't recommend you follow my step and dwelve right into it without research. I recommended you look up illustrations on how to take it apart, print them off in color, and use them as you take it apart. Make sure you have something to drink, to steady you, or if not for the mental image of steady it gives you. Keep all parts in separate areas. When you get to the speakers, look for loose connections, wires, damage on the speaker itself, etc, and determine what to replace if you must. Ebay and other online parts places have loads of good for the PSP. Or you can shop around in town and look for a "Broken" PSP with a cracked screen or broken UMD drive. Ask at pawn shops; as they usually keep broken goods in the back if they think the cannot sell them.
**Make sure the parts are the exact same w/ model numbers and all! I have read stories about people getting parts for their PSPs and having the part be from a newer or older model and having the speakers on when the headphones are plugged in in something. Hope that was some help. Its all basics. And don't worry about confidence. Its the mindset. If you pay attention to details, and do it comfortably, then confidence comes naturally. Good luck.

I actually wrote one of the early dissassembly faqs on how to take apart a psp from my experience, I just really don't know what I would do once I got it open. I dont think the speaker is blown, I really just think I shorted it, but despite having disssassembled my psp once before I don't know jack about wires and electronics. Honestly I want to keep my original 1001 in good shape so I may get sony to repair it, but it's a flat 90 dollar rate no matter what the issue, even just that speaker.
I won't worry about it until I get money. Then I might as well take it apart and attempt it if I'm going to send it off for repairs anyhow. Thanks for the input btw.

Welcome again Jay C. Did you think of it as a sudden software problem? That might happen. It doesn't hurt if you reflash the PSP.
