Ok, given the many times this question is asked, I decided to make this small guide.
Q: How do I access appxyz that uses port nnnnn from my local coffee shop ?
A: (short one ): You need to forward the corresponding nnnnn port to your PC's IP adress
Q: How do I forward a "port" ?
A: This is really hardware/manufacturer/device dependent, try to add your manufacturer and device name to this query: http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...q=port+forward
http://www.portforward.com/ might be of help as well
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_forwarding will tell you more about what exactly is "port forwarding".
Q: How do I find my PC's IP adress ?
A: In a command prompt, type: ipconfig
The first IP Adresss shown is the one your looking for
Q: Is this the IP adress my appxyz should connect to from remote ?
A: NO, this will work only within your WLAN (while you're at the same physical location as your PC).
From "remote" (from your coffee shop), you'll need your "public" IP adress.
Accessing http://www.portforward.com/ (mentionned above) WHILE AT YOUR PC's PHYSICAL LOCATION will show you your PUBLIC IP adress.
Accessing http://www.portforward.com while your allready sitting at your coffee shop will show YOUR COFFEE SHOP's public adress (of little use )
BEWARE: This address might change over (short or long) time (depending on your ISP (Internet Service Provider)).
Q: How can I make my IP "static" (not change over time) ?
A: Ask your ISP, he'll be happy to sell you one
or use a service like http://www.dyndns.com/ to allways map you to your current (changing) PUBLIC IP.
Q: What's dyndns and how do I set it up ?
A: Please head over at dyndns site, they have very complete tutorials.
