They're losing. If they don't offer something amazing in their next update, the only 2.1+ will be people ignorant to the scene.
A good friend once told me you are memory,
without them we equal nothing.
Since every territory has their own shiny PSPs by now Sony has lost the advantage since now everyone's more or less in the know about homebrew. It's funny they're responding with another Firmware update, though, and their rethoric's getting old.

I love how they talk about pspupdates;)
Looks now were voiding our warrenties with homebrew.
Anyways if they don;t have something good in 2.whatever some ppl might skip it, i WILL update to new firmware since i have 2 psp's, but i kinda like having both my psp's 1.50 right now.
IMO sony should stop fighting homebrew and embrace it. no matter how smart they think they are, there is someone who will be able to crack their protection. and just because 2.0 isnt as open as 1.5 yet doesn't mean it never will be. i paied $470 for my psp with a game (australian) and i have the right to do whatever the hell i want with it. if sony wants a war with the psp hacking scene they will lose. they should be happy that so many programs are coming out to make their psp able to do so much more than what they thought it (more so intended) it to do. hell the reason i bought a psp was for breath of fire 3 psp port (hoping like hell it comes out, outside japan) and snes/genesis/nes roms.
they should develop an official homebrew coding program and just snicker in the fact they are brutaly raping the nintendo DS in popularity and features.
The reason they won't is a) because with these programs coming out they will make no money on them b) pirating psp games make them lose money since they make almost no money on the sale of the psp.Originally Posted by Dark Mana

Hahahaha... like they would ever know before I exchanged it for a new one!
"It is not...what the device was designed for," said Patrick Seybold, a spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment America.
Umm... wtf? Lets see, do I go get a PSP, since I can install homebrew and do tons and tons of stuff with it, or do I go and buy a DS and a Palm...? They are denying themselfs of a whole new market of buyers... Games, Music, Video, internet, AND a word processor? OMG!!! LOLZ!!!1!1!!!one!!11! Noo way! Stop the n00bs that buy our products an have found a un-intended use for it!
The Can of worms has been opened already, there is no jamming them back in. The PSP is now a consol/multimedia/mobile PC. I know alot of us use emulators, but once a keyboard hits the market, I will be typing stuff up, surfing the web alot more, and the such. IMO they should allow for a version of Windows Mobile on the PSP, and start stealing a segment of the mobile PC market.
I made the mistake of upgrading to 2.0, I wont be dumb enough to go to 2.1. I dont even buy thier stupid UMDs (aka no good games), so I dont have any reason to be forced to v2.1. I will keep a copy of 2.0 to upgrade to if I ever want to browse the net on my PSP (http://psp.weebls-stuff.com/), other than that...
Like I am going to update, after the mistake I made to upgrade to 2.0. Hell, now I got Doom working I will never upgrade, unless that version is hacked aswell. Homebrew is just to much fun to loose, I mean, going on vacation, with like 5 UMD's and 200 Emulator games. Fun 4-ever!
I can't say I made a mistake upgrading to 2.0 (my PSP came with 1.52 so it was worthless) but I'm not getting 2.01 until it's been cracked.
Hehe, at least with got some good/bad rep on Cnet. :P
Its my PSP and im gonna do whatever i want with it...
Sony isn't forcing you, so what's your point? SCNR.Originally Posted by Noly
Don't be so fast to laugh at Sony, as the side effect of this could be that game producers would quit doing games for PSP as there now isnt much potential profit to be made from releasing new games for this console. "Yay! no more new games! Dead console! Banzai!" It's nothing to be cheerful for.
I for one, hope it will lead to a reduction in prices, to actually make it a viable option to buy games. And just to clarify, I'm all for homebrew and emulation, but I'm against the massive piracy of software, which only have a negative impact on the development of new software. Go buy your favourite games, that's my advice.
in my opinion sony wouldnt be losing so much if they released a few more decent games or ports, i myself am tired of all these **** racing games. i liked it when the ps2 was loaded with games to keep me busy and away from homebrew. if sony doesnt start bringing out some more games and genres i see the psp dying the way of the gamegear or dreamcast soon.
and on a side note sony cant force anyone to update so they are pretty much screwed unless they can make their update very very flashy and usable.
They are, all new Games Require Firmware 2.0Originally Posted by kuroneko
i have no intention of downloading psp games. this is a **** good system and im gonna support it. i just want my psp to have my fav emulator games too. i dont think theres anything wrong with that. i say make the games harder to dump and rip, not force the psp unit to be updated.
You dont get it do you, it's not all about pirating psp games, but it is about money, every game like sqaurze ppl play takes money away from Sony and it's Dev.'s from ppl not buying there game, and so do apps. And nothing requires 2.00 yet, the highest so far is 1.52.Originally Posted by Dark Mana
Also Sony is not forcing you to upgrade, you can choose not to upgrade and not play the games.
IMO squarez doesnt take money away from psp games, if it does then maybe the game dev should consider making a better game if its gotta lose to squarze lol. squarze is technicaly the same as comparing 1 game dev's official game with another the only thing being that the squarez dev's are giving it out for free. sony should just stick to bring out more and broader games and they wont have to worry so much about their losses to free games wich are legal to run on a psp. if they really wanna use the game dumps as an excuse they should work harder on protecting against that and leave the little guys making free games alone and stop trying to monopolize.
Homebrew is awsome, cheers for that. Piracy is bad, yes I download games, but I only download them to see if there fun, and if I like it, I will buy it.
So sony should be smarter in there next update. They should allow homebrew, but need to find a way to stop running illegal games. I dont think Sony minds homebrew.

So you think a company shouldn't control the product it makes?
Indeed, when we bought the PSP, it became OUR property, we may do anything we want with it. As long as it is legal offcourse. ;)Originally Posted by SovietSlayer

The new bug can be exploited to run code on the device and to downgrade to version 1.5 of the firmware, according to PSP Updates. Version 1.5 was more -friendly.
I don't believe in any way that Squarez competes with any commercially produced game, however the possibility to download that very same product for free, is competition that not many companies can handle, if any. Homebrew isn't about money. It only makes the PSP more useful. It doesn't compete with commercial products.Originally Posted by SovietSlayer

So? You don't have to buy/play them. You have the choice to not upgrade your PSP. Software does come with system requirements regardless of if they are sensible or not, e.g. on a PC do you install the latest DirectX version in order to play the game or not? If you don't, the game won't run. Simple. It's not different for the PSP.Originally Posted by Noly

The more people pirate games, the less incentive game makers have to make quality games. There's no point in denying that as it's true. Sony doesn't give a **** about crappy homebrew games (compared to commercial games, they are. sorry), they care about iso loaders. It's almost like most people here are turning a blind eye to legal copyrights.
Agree with you there doh004. Piracy seems to be such a guilt free crime for most, and a motivating factor for downgrading for a large percentage one would suspect.
IF I have a illegal game, I am like, cool. But OWNING the game, legally, gives a better satisfaction. Pretty weird, alas, like I said, I buy good games. :) And for the PSP, I dont see myself playing illegal games, I use homebrew (free games). Doom I have here so
i feel so bad for sony. we are raping the developers of the hard/software we use of money.
They get loads of cash to hack us ;)
Yeah, I actually get more satisfaction out of trying to play my 4 games through completely. I know if I downloaded 5-10 ISO's nothing would hold my attention span as there is no comitment. Ironically I'd be getting less rather than more out of the unit if I did that.Originally Posted by foose
Yeah, weird aint it? If something really is YOURS, you play it till the end, because u payed money for it. With illegal games, U dont always play to the end, because, well, you dont feel like to :)
