Default Squarez v0.8 Released [Multiplayer Infrastructure Beta!!!!]

Update: 9/25/05

I've just released Squarez v0.8.2 Beta 24 - Public Beta, which is a beta open to the public for testing.

The new version of Squarez features multiplayer IR and WLAN (Infrastructure mode).

You can download the beta at http://www.globware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=47

Remember, this is a beta so read the the first post carefully.

Updated: 8/23/05

New Features in v0.8

* Added Bomb Blockers which explode after a few seconds. Shrapnal will kill you.
* Added Enemy Hives which spawns generator babies very quickly.
* Added Generator Babies which grow up into Generator Blockers.
* Added Rage! Kill enemies quickly when in powerup mode to gain rage. Then press Triangle to unleash your rage, in this mode you can destroy anything!
* Added Rage Powerup. Gives full rage, but if you miss the powerup it explodes. (shrapnal kills anything)
* Added Custom mode. This allows you to create and play Squarez with your own rules. Simple text files so people can easily share custom games.
* Added scripting to Squarez in all game modes. Currently only a few commands exist, but this will allow you to create unique pre-planned events. Currently scripting must be done on a PC using a text editor and saved to your memory stick.
* Added Themes which include custom menu background, up to 10 game backgrounds, custom sprites, custom sounds and color/text settings. This will allow people to create and share their own custom theme packs. Sound is not required. Default sounds will be used. Up to 10 themes allowed.
* Added a Screenshot viewer.
* Updated the instructions screen and included a control layout help image.

Download it now at http://www.globware.com/psphomebrew_squarez.php

Note: If you experience problems running the game (error when ran) Please make sure you are using WinZip to uncompress the Zip File and WinRAR for the RAR File

Awh, you got to beta test!! You lucky...I would love to help out any way I can Socals, but looks like you already got your needed help as of now, just holla if ya need help

Everyone, these folders are not "corrupt hidden" (due to "manual install reasons" by Socals) and must be manually done yourself, this is no problem. If you already have an older version of Squarez (that has corrupt hidding name), just copy their names onto the newer folders.

Here are the names for corrupt hider:
Code:
SQUARE~1%
Squarez 1
Note: Just copy and paste the names onto the correct folders.

This game here is probably the main reason NOT to update to 2.0!!! One request tho...is there anyway to carry over your high scores from the previous installment?

You should just be able to copy your squarez.cfg file from the old squarez folder to the new one

This version is the best so far, my high score was 160 in arcade so i finally unlocked bomber mode, bomber mode is quite fun but not as described, if anyone wants me to post my beaten version of the game then I will so.

Suggestions:
+Instead of dieing mabey you should add a health bar that drains quickly when touching the enemy and also add power-ups for recharging the health.
+I found that the controls are harder in bomber mode.
+More Powerups, Be creative.
+Online Highscore ( I know its a longshot but idbe great).

Bomber mode is really different than described since I didn't want to give away too many secrets... I wanted users to get to the mode to see what it was all about. I tried to explain alittle more in the readme.txt file instead, but the ingame instructions and instructions on my website are very vague and as you mentionded not exactly correct. yet I think people will enjoy the differences once they play.

I have plans for new powerups which should hopefully make it into the next version. The main changes to game play were 2 new blockers and the ability for the player to drop grenades. I liked the player grenades so much I wanted to create a new mode where the player mainly drops grenades like crazy and dodges his shrapnal... which is how Bomber mode was born.

What do you mean by the controls being harder in Bomber mode? It is really universal and should be exactly the same as Arcade mode. The main difference between bomber and arcade is shrapnal kills in bomber where in arcade it passes through the player.

A health/armor type system is something i'm planning for Career mode but not sure about for Arcade mode. (Career mode is still in concept only stages)

Glad to see everyone is enjoying the new features... I worked hard to get it out this week before the new 2.0 firmware release so people upgrading could atleast get some playing time in...

About the Controls its probably because I only played this game at 2AM when I was planning on going to bed but got addicted to the game so I was a little tired and am not really used to bomber mode since AI act a whole lot differently than Arcade or Survirval or Classic, But bomber mode is a great addition.
Just throwing out more ideas:

By saying destroyes i mean the ones that cannot be eaten by the purple square.

*Mabey add a new destroyer that chases you more quickley but if he touches the another destroyers he and the destroyer(s) that touched die,
*a power up that looks like lightening that shocks all of destroyers and kills them,
*Mabey some Colour changing bad guys, instead of mainly just red,
*New backround music, i dont know about you but the original plain one really pissed me off, I could post some techno/disco sorts in either mp3/wav/midi,
*more of the blue colour
*mabey an unlock-able secret *Drug* level where every thing is messed up kinda like in the super mario game in that stage where everything is weird.
*A fancy screen for when you see the game in the PSP menu wouldent hurt.

Its late and its 2AM again, ZzZ

Well since the sound pissed me off so much I decided to make my own version, kinda, the Changes are:
*2 Different Backround Sound made with Frooty Loops 5
*Music in the PSP menu when game is selected
*Decent background in the PSP menue when game is selected
*Its now about 5MB
*Bomber mode Unlocked by getting 160 in Arcade for those of you that couldent unlock it

Thanks to socals for creating this game, I just changed some things that pissed me off, game is exactly the same except the backround sound and when highlighted in th PSP menu. I called it Squares_UO_v7b.
Get it HERE

FrozenIpaq is correct that it cannot be done now. I've gotten a few requests for using the d-pad so i'm considering allowing people to swap the functionality of the dpad and analog stick but I cannot say it's definite for now. It would take some re-writing to implement it but yes after a few hours of testing my damn hand gets cramped too and I pretty much have to rest for an hour or so... heh

Yes a D-Pad option would be great, that analog stick is just too damn small, and also I found that if you put a background music track that is over 5MB the game crashes, and it would be great to have MP3 support instead of WAV which takes up more space.

You sure? I have a WAV file over 10MB on my PSP, and Squarez works fine.

Well All I know is that when I had a 5MB song which was like all the rest is that it crashed for me, it was stuck at the loading screen so i took that file out, anyway, read below.

Well Here is Squarez_UO_v7c
Changes are:

*4 new Different Backround Tracks made with Frooty Loops 5 for a total of 6 Backround Tracks
*Its now about 11MB
*Got rome really good highscores, if you can beat them then I'd like to see it.

Thanks to socals for creating this game, I just changed some things that pissed me off, game is exactly the same except the backround sounds. I called it Squares_UO_v7c.

Hopefully I will update it soon with another 4 new backround tracks for a total of 10.
