That's only a proof-of-concept.

The kernel starts, yes, but that's it.
No HW drivers, not to talk of any shell or even more not talking of aps/binaries running on it....

I think it's taking quite some moooooooooooooooooore time (a year, maybe two) till a "working" Linux comes to the PSP.
Working as in "can run binaries/programs that are compiled for it".

What kind of functionality do you expect from the PSP though? I mean the PS3 as powerful as it is gets a ton of criticism from people for its linux capabilities, I don't want to imagine how inefficient linux would be on the PSP. And what architecture would be used ?

If you already have a Linux box running at your house, try out PSPSSH

It allows you to connect remotely to your Linux pc, and like sitting at it, issue terminal commands.

Big whoop. The same thing can be done from almost any smartphone or handheld Linux-based computer.
This doesn't make the PSP any more "free" and open via a dedicated Linux distro for it.

That's only because the hypervisor prevents people from running PS2 ISOs on their PS3.

You can still run tons of apps and emus on it without restriction.

@iball:

I never said it was exclusive.

I'm just trying to offer a alternative to true PSP Linux.

I could go for a true linux for PSP, since I really don't care to give up any room on my PC for linux I think having it on my PSP would make it worth learning enough to consider usng in the future.

He doesn't care about Smartphones or handheld PCs, hence why he posted this in the PSP Hacking section.

He stated facts FOR the PSP.

You've totally got it wrong. People whine about the linux capabilities because Sony sets ridiculous restrictions on hardware access and HDD partitioning (so it's 10 gigs for Linux and the rest for PS3 or vice versa, yay!). Linux on PS3 is inefficient because there's no hardware GPU access, and the Cell sucks as a general purpose CPU (it has one crippled "true" PowerPC core, hooray).

I'm not waiting for Linux on PSP. Why? Because it's totally useless! PSP has no good input devices (yes, we can use IR keyboards but that's it). The PSP doesn't have enough RAM, neither does it have a MMU. Making an usable Linux system for PSP would take more effort than it'd give back in terms of usefulness. I couldn't even imagine X11 running on PSP. Sure, it'd be cool to have it, but we're perfectly fine without it anyway.

Hellcat: Uhm, it does have a tty over serial port. so there IS a shell, and you can run apps on it, you just need to compile them along with the kernel

I'm a Linux geek and all, but I'm with MaTiAz on this one. There's no real need for Linux on the PSP, nor will it work particularly well if we could put it on there.

The fact that I'm posting this from Windows is a different matter It's just that all of my apps and games are for Windows, and WINE isn't a viable solution.

Yeah, GCC on Linux is amazing.

I believe in the coexistence of Linux and Windows, so I have a dualboot and use them both from time to time, as I feel like home in both of them

I have my windows machine, and then a computer that's my server that's always connected to the net. SSH, and it's like sitting at the terminal, from my windows machine
