Anyone else given up on homebrew?

This is a discussion on Anyone else given up on homebrew? within the PSP Homebrew and Hacks Discussion forums, part of the PSP Development, Hacks, and Homebrew category; I did. I have given up on homebrew since firmware 2.7 got released. I was still interested in homebrew, but ...

Default Anyone else given up on homebrew?

I did. I have given up on homebrew since firmware 2.7 got released. I was still interested in homebrew, but my interest slowly faded away when I saw the dozens of homebrew firmwares getting released by Dark_Alex and lots of others. I just lost track of everything, I don't know what homebrew is available, which ones are good or not good. On top of it all, there are hardly good homebrew apps available, nothing interests me ... on the exception of a few.

The current firmware on my PSP is 3.5 so I still have an open spot to use homebrew (using the Lumines trick/hack/whatever) but in all honesty, I'll probably never go back to homebrew. Besides, I feel like it's getting too risky now.

Okay.

How is it risky anyway?

And the custom firmware releases coincided with the official Sony firmwares and added functionality to them by allowing homebrew and Playstation ISO's to be playable. It is about as difficult to keep up with as the Sony firmwares, as they are released within the same time.

I think its all pretty simple, you downgrade to 1.50, then you upgrade to either 3.40 OE-A which is the last and latest of Dark Alex, or 3.52 M33, those the only 2 custom firmwares used

I like homebrew, but it really isn't as good as it was before. There are tons of useless apps and games made now that aren't fun at all. Old homebrew is still the best homebrew, which really is pitiful.

The only homebrew I could see myself using these days would be Pimpsteamer (If I could install it), but all I use my PSP for now is Fifa '07.

having homebrew doesn't hurt. 3.52 M33 is just like 3.52 official, but with homebrew and prx and stuff.

I finally jumped onto the PSP homebrew bandwagon (picked up a 1.5 on ebay and a 4 gig card) and have been loving it more and more..although at the moment I'm torn between which I prefer: GP2X (which I also have) or PSP...

...they both have their strengths/weaknesses, I suppose...

Not even. About a year ago the first custom firmwares for 1.5 were coming out.

The homebrew scene isn't what it once was. Back in 2005 it was in it's prime with scores of great releases everyday, but obviously the number of unique ideas waned and it lost its hype.

I have certainly not given up on homebrew. While homebrew is not a replacement for the PSP's games and features it does give the system a few added bonuses like PSP Radio (which not only plays MP3s with visualizations but also easily streams internet radio broadcasts), various PDA-like programs (several of which can use an infrared PDA keyboard), and emulators that allow people to play the games they grew up with while on the go. Of course, being able to convert a collection of PS1 games to run on the PSP and backing up games I already own in case the plastic cases around the UMDs break (which happened before several times) are also added bonuses.

On a side note, I suppose the homebrew games could be a little bit better, but I did not purchase my PSP specifically for homebrew and some of the games are actually decent.

At any rate, even if all homebrew sucked I would still have it installed on my PSP, mainly because I find SONY's approach towards homebrew to be quite appaling. Those who purchase something should be allowed to do with it as they please, not deal with the company who manufactured it trying to control what they can do.

Default Risky, yes and no.....but mostly no.

In a way it can be risky, if your a n00b such as myself lol and mess up the flash0. But on the other hand you get great homebrew apps as well as crap ones. Universal remote, pimpstreamer, daedalus and others are good. You can always "recover" to official firmware if you want to. So risky, wouldn't class it as. This is how the idea passes on ======>

I had solid help from the best of friends who knew about homebrew for a long time.

Your mileage may vary.. But grab the bull by the balls and get a custom firmware that's screams in everyones post (M33)

Yes it is risky in some way but if you take your time and don't rush things you won't screw yourself.

And yes homebrew was the reason why I bought a psp.

i love my homebrew. The Snes emulators are great, I love PSPDOOM v5, Ozone and No Gravity are very good. PSPRadio, The Links2 browser, AOTM, Squarez: all very good homebrew. Most of them are old though...... homebrew really isnt what it used to be....

Emulators all the way!
That's an invaluable bonus!

I've recenlty customized my XMB as well, and that's one good extra thing.

As to homebrew games, most of them do not excite me.
