Custom XMB (CXMB) 2.1 can potentially cause bricks?
Just thought I'd take the time to report this. While I am very sure that this is not intentional by the author of this fantastic plugin, today I had a very awkward experience when I put the plugin and some themes on my PSP and some font files too.
Bare in mind, NOTHING was flashed to my flash0 at all, at least not by me, I am sure what to make of the bricks. But thankfully when the bricks had occurred I had my Pandora Battery handy to unbrick, and needless to say it worked miraculously.
Here is what I did. I installed the theme to ms0:/cxmb/cxmb.prx and put ms0:/cxmb/cxmb.prx in ms0:/seplugins/vsh.txt. After the plugin was installed and working I had used an old theme which I have been using and worked just fine on CXMB 1.2 with 3.52 M33-2 and it still works fine with 1.2 and does not cause any bricks.
How the brick happened, I installed the custom theme files ms0:/cxmb/vsh and ms0:/cxmb/font, the problem for some reason seems to reside in the portion which loads the fonts, now why this would cause a brick is beyond me. When I put the ltn0.pgf font in the proper folder by itself, it worked fine, except for the crashing the WWW browser, which has been present ever since CXMB 1.x. I then proceeded to copy the remainder of the font files over to the font folder on my memory stick, I restarted my PSP so the change would happen, and the next thing I knew I was surprisingly greeted by a brick. Just to clarify, I made sure I had only copied and not moved the font files from the flash0 to my memory stick.
Like I said earlier no files were flashed to my flash0 by myself, I cannot stress this enough. I was able to recovery my system using the Pandora Battery + Memory Stick Pro Duo, I kept turning my PSP on and off, and the PSP seemed to keep getting bricks when ever I did so. I thought this was very awkward, so I disabled the plugin, and sure enough, I am no longer getting any bricks. It should also be noted that a couple of times, I had permanent bricks, I couldn't access the recovery menu of 3.52 M33-2 some times I was able to.
Just thought I would write about my experience to let everyone know about what happened, and to take extra care when dealing with this plugin.
