The following is a interview is about a developer DJ liquid aka Ron, about a Hombrew shell he is making, a break through in the hombrew community. I Vaiga septimos AKA Ritterrav, is giving him the interview. All hail the PSP OS refered to as BIROS.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Ok, so lets start simple, in your own words, explain what your making.
DJ Liquid 2k6: Many people don't like the current look and feel of the Sony dashboard, I thought it needed alot of additions and improvements, so I started coding my own homebrew dashboard based off of NaoNeo and Qubits PSOS source code. After about two hours working with their code, I found out that alot of the things I needed the dashboard to do the PSPOS could not. So I started to slowly rewrite the entire code base, and the outcome came out very beautifully, if not a little buggy.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Ok, good, i myself dislike the feel of the current dashboard. So, what new features have you added that you can tell us about right now?
DJ Liquid 2k6: Well I have added the ability to skin my dashboard. Each graphical componenent you see has an external image, if you edit that image you change the look of the dash.
DJ Liquid 2k6: The Sony dashboard does not have the ability to have favorites, I have added the ability to my dash. If you play Squarez alot, but have it at the bottom of your list, you can add it to your favorites and have a buttom press away.
DJ Liquid 2k6: My dashboard will also have the ability to have visualizations for the music being played in the built in media player.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: So you added the ability to have a custom dash board, good, just for the record, this will not overwrite your original PSPOS right?
DJ Liquid 2k6: Support for larger backgrounds/wallpapers is also added. Replacing the existing backgrounds for the Sony dashboard is often dangerous and can "brick" your PSP. With my dash, you just browse to the image you wish to use as your wallpaper and set it as a wallpaper. Nothing from the firmware is touched.
DJ Liquid 2k6: No part of the orignal Sony dash, including the firmware, will be tampered with in any way. You will launch my dash like you would a homebrew game or application.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Trying to cover everything for the Noobs
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Also, does not work with Any firmware higher than 1.5? correct?
DJ Liquid 2k6: Corrent, homebrew can only be executed with a version 1 or 1.50 version firmware. Sony has put extensive security in versions 1.51 and above to prevent the execution of unsigned code. This is done to mainly prevent games and movies created by Sony and its affiliates from being pirated.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Ok,So what actually works on the PSP OS that you are making?
DJ Liquid 2k6: Currently I decided to add alot of addons to the dash, but did not refine them all that much. My dash is currently able to launch the majority of homebrew applications and games without exiting the dash. It is able to browse the memory stick and copy, rename, edit (txt), and delete files. I have also added the ability of a FTP (file transfer protocol) server into the dashboard. Many people do not have the USB cable, or just hate using it. With a FTP server you just need a FTP client, and wireless Internet. You connect to the FTP server on the PSP and transfer any and all files you want over to the memory card of the PSP. USB functionality has also been added, it is currently set to always on as it does not consume any battery while it is not plugged into a PC. The server side of the IR xFur also works (I believe), but the client side will still need to be worked on and developed further. IR xFur allows a PSP with my dash loaded to transfer individual files, entire folders, and even the entire memory stick over to another PSP running the IR xFur Client. The client is the program that collects all data recieved through the IR port and saves them to the memory stick. The ability to use the WiFi for PSP to PSP transfers does not exist yet.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Excelent, So, any homebrew will be able to run on your dash? Your dash allows (or will soon) allow fully functional hombrew ablications and games, correct?
DJ Liquid 2k6: Correct, currently only games and applications that do not require any other file other than the eboot file will be able to work. Files such as Ceres require external sound data will not be able to run due to faulty coding on my part. This is planned on being resolved as soon as possible.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: I see, also, what is the Name of this OS? Do you have any?
DJ Liquid 2k6: I wished to keep the name of PSIX that Qubits and Fluff came up with, but they have expressed clearly that they are working on a new dash themselves and will probably use the name PSIX. So for the time being, my dash is nameless.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Any names you have been thinking of?
DJ Liquid 2k6: I am quite fond of BIRos, it was the name of the Xbox dashboard I was developing before I gave up due to some individuals who decided to call all my work theirs.
DJ Liquid 2k6: Biros / BIRos, whichever you want to refer to it as.
DJ Liquid 2k6: BIR = Beauty in red, what I called my current fiance before I knew her :-)
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Thats a simple name that every body will be able to remember.
DJ Liquid 2k6: Correct.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Ok, so now we go into time tables, When did you start this project?
DJ Liquid 2k6: To tell you the truth, last night (August 13th, 2005). I recieved the PSOS source code from neoxbox and immediately began coding on it. After some tinkering I started work on mine. Havnt had any sleep since.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Ok, so its safe to say you started August the 13th?
DJ Liquid 2k6: Correct.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Ok, so how long do you see yourself working on this?
DJ Liquid 2k6: If after the first few releases I get good response for PSP users, I plan on continuing this project until there is no more to add or perfect upon. When I do decide to stop work on my dash, I will probably release all source codes for other developers to take their hand at adding other features or adding features that do not exist at the time that I quit.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: So, you will continue to supply us with updates with this realease correct?
DJ Liquid 2k6: Correct, I will keep improving the dashboard, add new functions, and release new editions whenever I deem suitable.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: I see, Also will you release the the source when its first release of this?
DJ Liquid 2k6: I plan to keep this project closed source until I or neoxbox no longer wish to continue work on the project.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Also, who else is working on this project with you?
DJ Liquid 2k6: Currently there are three people involved with the project, myself as both the main coder and graphics agent for the first few releases, neoxbox as the public relations and as the secondary coder, and Nosrak113 aka Karson.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Ok, so when do you see a release and any kind coming for Biros if you dont mind me calling it that.
DJ Liquid 2k6: Not at all. I plan to release a inside beta of the dashboard this Saturday to the staff members of PSPUpdates.com and to neoxbox and one other individual that I have not yet selected. A few days after that I will release a closed beta to twenty or so people from the PSPUpdates.com forums; And hopefully, a public beta/version .1 release a few days after that.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: I see, and that last person will anybody you choose?
DJ Liquid 2k6: Correct. Probably from the PSPU forums as Biros is a PSPU exclusive.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Wondeful. Also, Can you state your forum name?
DJ Liquid 2k6: I am known on the forums as Ron.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Ok, Im RitterRav also.
DJ Liquid 2k6: Ah, nice to meet you :-)
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Likewise, Ok, so lets go to your compitition. What do you think about the OS that PSPearlese is developing?
DJ Liquid 2k6: discordia? lol dont know his
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Yes, i think thats the one.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Have you seen the Video?
DJ Liquid 2k6: I belive that Discordia has functions and potential that Biros does not yet contain. Healthy competition is always a good way to motivate someone.
DJ Liquid 2k6: The video of Discordia in action is very cool, it shows alot of things and proves that the concept is in fact the real deal.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Ok, is there somthing that you think, your os will bring to the table that they wont?
DJ Liquid 2k6: Discordia seems to be more of a file manager rather than a dashboard. From the video supplied, Discordia is able to launch homebrew and has the ability for some customization. Biros contains many features including MP3 playback, soon to come video playback. A photo gallery, and several other small utilities that make Biros stand out from the rest.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Also, from the pictures you posted, Biros, is a very nicely polished dashboard.
DJ Liquid 2k6: I have around four experience as a web developer. Developing web sites requires knowledge of image creation, mainy using Photoshop. The skills I obtained over the years has helped greatfully into making the GUI of Biros.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: So your OS is not only easy on the eyes, but has the funtionalty to boot.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: so when will you have any small previews for the public?
DJ Liquid 2k6: I plan on releasing a video teaser of Biros's abilities this coming Saturday, the same day I release the internal beta to the PSPU staff.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Ok, ok, very good, i will among the first to be there to download it. So, to round this all up, is there any little surprises you keeping secret?
DJ Liquid 2k6: I am indeed :-) Unfortunately, I am not able to release the surprise even in this interview It will be something quite amazing, and considered "illegal" on the PSPU website.
DJ Liquid 2k6: (no its not a loader)
DJ Liquid 2k6: lol
vAiGa SepTiMoS: lol
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Ok, Is there any thing you'd like to add to this, for the public? a nice quote just from you to them?
DJ Liquid 2k6: Expect the worst until the best happens. Seems alot of the members of PSPU are alredy following this saying but doesnt hurt to get the word out to the rest.
vAiGa SepTiMoS: Ok, so you give me full permision to publish this to PSPupdates.com? Correct?
DJ Liquid 2k6: Correct.
A small note, DJ Liquid is not giving any eboot's at this time, so please dont ask.
------------------------- End of interview ------------------------------
This is so people dont ask already asked questions, but new ones are welcomed.
