i have the psp 1.5. I have playing games with the SNES emulator. I heard that if you play the new PSP games, that it automatically upgrades you to 2.0, thus disenabling the use of playing emulators. Any truth to this?

its not automatic but u do have to update to play new games (none at the moment though so your good

There is no game out yet that requires a firmware higher than 1.5, but when games come out that require 2.0 it will not automatically upgrade it will ask you if you want to update or not but if you do not update you wont be able to play the game.

if u need to upgrade to play they game the UMD sign will appear in the game menu and u click it to upgrade.

At this moment, there are NO UMD games in the US that require you to update higher than 1.50, which is the lowest firmware version a US PSP can have.

And the Japanese games that demand 1.52 don't actually *need* 1.52 to run, they just refuse to run without it unless you get dodgy.

This may have been answered already, but a friend bought Death,jr the other day and when I asked him if he had to install something in order to play the game he said "no". So feel free to go out and buy some PSP games

Are you saying that this does not work then. I have it on my Mem Stick but havent needed to use it yet. As I have JP 1.5 and only have two games. But I live in the UK and the PSP is being launched as V2.0 in a about 2 weeks I was thinking I will be needing it soon.

Also I agree GTA is overhyped, I will most likely get it but I refuse to update unless an exploit is found for v2.0 or an absolutely stunning RPG gets launched for PSP requiring an update (along the Greatness of Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Trigger, Star Ocean)

Formula 1 requires 1.52 or higher to play.. I just got a copy today and now i'm torn about whether I should update or try and return the game

Or you can try WAB version changer, it can trick your psp into thinking it is a 1.52.

Technically Sony can force you to upgrade. As you have bought a piece of there hardware, and if they say there hardware should be running v2.0 they can force you to upgrade. However I personally don't think they will as there will be too many people complaining. They will at least tell you that the game needs an update and give you the option.

Anyway I have used the WAB version changer to trick my JAP 1.5 into thinking it is v2.0 and it runs games needing updates fine. So you may as well just use this until v2.0 is cracked or a downgrader is made.

I dont think they can force you to update. Technically you have purchased a product which is now your personal property, if Sony forcefully update the software on that product against your will then that is classed as damage to your property surely?....
Think of Windows, Micro$oft never forcefully updates Windows without the users say so...even when the update is one to validate the product as origional and not 'dodgy'....
