Default Windows 95/98, making it workable on the psp, possibly.

http://www.danhendricks.com/articles...s%2095%20Lite/
^^ this should work for anyone, it shows how to make windows 95 WAYYYY smaller, like 35 mb as long as you have the cd (or iso) lol.

http://www.litepc.com/

anyone want to try making an image and booting it, i havent downloaded any of it yet. I'm going to try, but hey if someone can do it faster than I can great.

edit - requires the window cd i think...

edit JUST found this
http://www.embeddingwindows.com/

runs with 8 mb ram at a 1-3 second bootup

"Tiny! installations as small as 9MB, 11MB for networked install with Explorer GUI
Lightning FAST bootup (as little as 3 seconds to the desktop!!)
Instant on/off - just hit the power switch
Enhanced security
Run from flash memory as small as 8MB - even removable USB keys!
Compatible with all existing Windows 9x hardware - a huge array of drivers at your disposal
Ease of use and familiarity with the OS and software development tools "

just some ideas...

it cost something, it just doesnt have a price on the site...

I'm going to give it a try this weekend or tonight.

I won't post ISOs of the result though, so nobody ask.

thats a really cool achievment for the psp, but im just curious, what kind of things would you guys like to do with windows 95 on your psp? I guess word processing would be sort of slow atm, but possible. There is like minesweep and various card games... Any ideas?

im telling you, the embedded windows is made for 8 MB RAM, just what we provide the actual windows 95 with. It would go pretty fast if someone was to get the embedded or lite pc. Problem is i dont have a windows 98 cd to check windows 98 lite.

Just spent the last 2 hours doing this, got my Win98 down to 53MB, dont think its meant for PSP. Gave me alot of BSODs and errors during boot. Speed is around 2 minutes for boot. After that pretty fast. Got Aston shell installed (Windows skin) and it looks beautiful

Dont recommend for the everyday noob.

Ok, so you have windows running a bit faster now....what can you do other than word? I imagine you can't exactly play Starcraft. But even so, I think its still interesting to get PSP to boot a lot faster. Does it run programs faster too? I doubt it would, but I'm still curious.

Ive been thinkin about this for a while now, but does win98 recognize the usb port on top? If it does, does the give any chance into using a harddrive, flash card reader, etc? Just a thought. Good job with all the work being done on this

So after we edit this file, do we replace the old on in the PRECOPY2.CAB , and what all are you changing on Windows 98, cause there is no athena, ohare, or string?? Or just leave it sitting outside of the .cab file with the old one left in there? I'm assuming replace, but IDK.

Now, what we need is a way for Windows to accept the PSP's WiFi antenna as an accepted device. This would mean that you could connect to any network you wanted to, and browse the internet, with, oh I dunnno, Firefox.
THAT is what Win95 would be useful for.

nice find. I was thinking. Would it be easier after you finished editing to create a cd image with all the files you changed/extracted and run that on a virtual cd drive.
If bochs doen't have a problem with virtual drives. Then the existing method would work.

welll that would be stupid to run firefox on windows.. that is retarted.. firefox is open -source. so this means that the only thing one has to do is compile it for the psp and edit the controller maps and bAm! Firefox on psp without windows would be better  now u dance because you here your psp updates screen name on cnn because u started this cool things that sony never thought of.. sony could of hired you and put firefox on a psp umd and sell it for like $6.. that would be amazing!

2.00 will be hacked probably after sony releases it for the us! someone has to open up the pbp file and edit it soo they can run homebrew as the only change
and the psp version would have to be 2.1x or some number like that

Sorry, but firefox relies on windows files, so it would be very hard to port it to PSP.

I have contacted embeddingwindows.com through email asking for the price of the smallest and fastest bootable Windows (possibly down to a whopping 8 mb if im not mistaken!) . As soon as they respond, i'll decide if I want to buy it and give it a try depending on if the price is crazy or not. The embedded windows is very small, boots in 3 seconds and runs efficiently off 8 mb ram. All of those requirements are met by the boch's emulator for the PSP, which is the best part.

Alright, I haven't said anything about this, but it has been making me kind of mad. People, if you don't know what you're talking about, don't post. Specifically I've seen several people say that Firefox requires windows libraries. This is not true. If it were, how would there be a Linux version and a Mac OSX version?

Just guessing, I guess I qualify under your category of people who shouldn't post. But wouldn't its stand to sense that seperate versions depend on different files?

As in OSX would need OSX files opposed to Windows?

Of course they do, but there are many many versions of firefox for many different platforms. If relying on operating system specific files was a major problem in porting the browser to a new system, that wouldn't be the case.

I'm not saying that a port would be by any means easy, but the reasons people give are not logical.
