im trying to config the keypad to up,down,right,left but those are the navigational buttons for the menu... how do i spec those keys?

You change the keys in the built-in key config. It doesn't affect the menu.

correct... you use the hard keys to move up down etc... how can assign one of those keys to something

Don't you press left and right to select the key?
