This is a discussion on m4a player within the PSP Homebrew and Hacks Discussion forums, part of the PSP Development, Hacks, and Homebrew category; is there any homebrew apps that could play .m4a music files?...

The XMB music player supports m4a so long as they don't contain DRM like the ones downloaded through iTunes. And if your m4a's are from iTunes they won't work with any player besides iPod/iTunes unless you purchased the more expensive non-DRM files.

As long as there's no DRM the m4a files should play. What version firmware are you using?

The PSP doesn't support AAC HEv1 or 2 only AAC LC (at least from music, video works fine...). That's probably why.

actually, last night i found 1 player, psplayer MT, that could play the m4a files on the PSP... since it's a multi-player, it will only play the m4a files individually... just like when you're playing a mp4 movie... you can't play the m4a music files sequentially or one after the other... |

You have to change m4a to mp4, m4a is an UNOFFICIAL extension used by iTunes. It's still a mp4 container. You won't get your ID3 tags though, they aren't supported by the PSP. If they are HE-AAC, they will still play (HE-AAC is backwards compitable with LC) but will sound crappy

Honestly though if they were MP3's first why convert them to to AAC anyway? The internal music player supports MP3 and if you want longer battery life use LightMP3. You just loose quality transcoding from one lossy format to another.
And yes just renaming the m4a extention to mp4 is enough.
