Exclamation Ghetto Rig Slim

In my attempt to make my PSP FAT a bit lighter in weight, I've decided I want to remove the UMD component since I don't use it anyway. Does anybody know if this is possible? My friend actually tried it but now he has problems galore. Has this been done successfully?

Thanks for youe consideration.

... bit of a pirate, are we?

Yeah, you could probably do it, but the system might freak out and never boot up due to trying to initialize a device that isn't there.

For the mini Sub woofer mod, they usually take out the UMD drive unit. AFAIK the system has never fought back or "freaked".

If you want to learn about hardware mods, I advise you to go to the Acidmods forums, They will help you will hardware issues, They helped me with my Phat and it's LED install.

Yes you can just take it out, at least in the earliest model. I don't think it will make it much lighter.
I guess you'd also break the UMD door switch so it is always open.

Thumbs down ...tried it

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I actually tried it tonight and it was NOT successful. Although it could of been an unbricking gone bad. Basically, everything looked okay until I went to update the firmware. PSP booted fine, Sony Logo okay, but then locks up and the XMB icons never show up. I can access the VSH menu and the recovery menu, but thats it. So I thought something was corrupt in the Flash 0, but after writing files from a working PSP, upon rebooting, the UMDLESS PSP bricked.

Anyway, after 2 more tries, I decided I don't need a SLIM.

Um writing (specific) files from another psp's flash0 is not going to work.

Which leans away from the conclusion that it bricked due to the UMD drive being removed.

Congratulations, you made an assumption rather than ask for help and bricked your PSP!

And to think, all you needed to do was format flash1 from recovery mode... Hope you have a pandora.
