Default Recurring Problem with PSP

Hi there. I have a PSP phat that I bought when they still shipped with the 1.50 firmware. Everything worked fine with it until this past winter when it was accidentally left in my car overnight and the lcd cracked from the cold.

It sat for about four or five months until I ordered a replacement screen and now it looks fine, but it randomly hangs during startup or when loading an eboot. I can sometimes fix it temporarily by using a pandora battery to load firmware 3.71, but it usually starts hanging again after a day or two until eventually the homebrew hangs every time. When I try to update the firmware beyond that, most of the time it freezes at 99% and I have to restore it via pandora battery again. Any time I manage to update the firmware successfully, the problem will eventually start again.

My umd drive is completely unresponsive now, but I mainly use homebrew anyway. Does anybody have any idea what the problem could be? If it was a flash0 or flash1 problem, shouldn't that be remedied with a firmware update or by reflashing in the recovery menu? Thank you for your help.
