The paralle were supposed to be for sonys addons and accesories.
However the only things I know that used it were 3rd party such as a numerous amount of cheat cartridges (explorer, gameshark etc), external mod chips. VCD player and a gameboy player. I'm sure sony must have made something for it. The serial was for linking ps1s (like ilink on ps2) Hope that answers the question.
