Ok.
The BOOT.BIN is the decrypted version of the EBOOT.BIN.
If you patched it then you will be able to play the game in a older fw.Like the Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny patch.
Although in some games the BOOT.BIN is a dummy file.Open it in a hex editor and you will notice that it has only dots.

Hang on a minute, I thought the BOOT.BIN was for the game itself, where-as the EBOOT.BIN was for the Update Data if the game requires it.

The eboot.bin that is the update is in the /PSP_GAME/SYSDIR/UPDATE/EBOOT.BIN
And the games "loaders"(BOOT.BIN and the EBOOT.BIN) are in this location:
/PSP_GAME/SYSDIR/EBOOT.BIN
/PSP_GAME/SYSDIR/BOOT.BIN

Mr.Grammar, I think you misspelled"broked", which should be broke.

You literally broke it?

i think all boot.bin's past 3.00 are dummy files
the E in Eboot means Encrypted
if you look at recovery in custom firmware, advanced options in particular, there is an option to excecute boot.bin ISO\UMD, which is why you could run 2.81 games on 2.71SE CFW.
then sony figured that using the CFW recovery options you can enable the launch of boot.bin bypassing the encryption and so after that the boot.bin's were made into dummies but still used to check unencrypted file size (when you use yoshihiro's decrypter the unencrpted eboot.bin should be same size as the boot.bin dummy file)

Well not in all games.
The soul calibour has a non-dummy boot.bin.

are you sure.
i just tried booting soul calibur UMD using excecute boot.bin in UMD\ISO
error 80020148
i'm pretty sure its a dummy.
i'll try opening it in hex editor when i get home to make sure, but it wont excecute the boot.bin

ahh.
thanks for the link, interesting.
by the looks of it, if you just hex editted those strings and enable boot.bin excecution then it should work all the same.
i dont see why they would take a backwards step like this.
putting an unencrypted bootable on any UMD now is just asking for trouble, it makes it too easy to patch up.

good to know.
i havent started soul calibur yet but when i do, if loading times start pissin me off i'll be dumping and editting boot.bin for sure.
