Default Propably the only thing that comes close to a UMD

is a Sony Minidisc!
here are some pics that I took of an old minidisc i found in the bin at work
1. The minidisc disc

2. The UMD in its shell
http://img310.imageshack.us/img310/7201/dsc000670gg.jpg
3. UMD and minidisc on top
http://img310.imageshack.us/img310/8563/dsc000660mg.jpg

Now, if we take a look at the minidisc there are several types, i think mine is the basic one and i dont really know if they differentiate in size of disc, but on capacity sides a Hi-MD has 1gigabyte of storage

And these minidiscs are 61 milimeters in diameter and UMD is 60 milimeters in diameter and theres propably a slight difference between the two in the middle of about 0.1 - 0.2 milimeters

So... we would need to shave the minidisc around in order for it to become 60 milimeters and that would be okay since 0.5 millimeter is plastic on one side and same for the other making that a really close clone of a UMD

My questions would be, if Hi-MD ican be read from a DVD laser or are DVD lasers compatible with all types of CD's

And the big question is will the Sony PSP read these discs and the filesystem that its based on

The two discs couldn't be more different, a minidisc is magneto-optical and a UMD is just a standard disc like a DVD but it uses a different wavelength to that. This topic has been discussed in great depth, and each time it has been revealed to be absolutley impossible.
