No, as Jebus has said, the ROM itself is not a single piece for MAME
Anyways, most of the arcade games (not the recent ones) are most likely to be board/motherboards. On it, there are drivers (video/sound/controls) on each with the Rom (game itself). Since not like the current game consoles (which have all the drivers and OS and such build in the machine, and Media as game titles), each game machine had to have their own. So, from that aspect, if you unzip the ROMs for MAME, you'll be able to find several files.

In MAME, it does support "*.zip" files, so, as a total look, although its zipped up, it is a bunch of individual files. So if you want to think the "Image" way, the *.zip for MAME is like *.gba for the others. (although I don't know if the.gba is a bunch of files or not.)

Well, if I had to write more clearly probably it'll be an essay. So, allow me to write this short.

BTW, most of the recent games, (Namco, Sega, Capcom and such) are on DVD drives or GD-ROM (as in Naomi, Naomi2 systems, System256 by Namco, I think it was a DVD, while the spec is like PS2 itself.) For the recent games like Taito's Type-X, thats a PC, and the coming Lindberg from Sega (with VF5) that's also a PC-Like system as well.

Hope this helps.

Will try when I can......
