After reading though it it doesn't seem so.
You always take a chance compressing your 32mb card.
Or is that a defnite no?

yes thats because there 2 diffrence partitions, you have to combine them to make it one partition so u can use it as ONE memory stick... having 2 partions makes the psp thinks there 2 memory sticks... and THERE can be 2.. so it gives a error

yea, i mean why would sandisk release something that actually has more space than provided, i mean if there is extra space it is probally need so the memory stick when plugged into a device, gives off the signature thats it a memory stick pro duo. it doesnt seem right or possible. im not gonna try it even if it is confirmed to work. ill wait for the 4 gig datle HDD, which will only be 200$

there are two possible things going on here

1. its a glitch with the cards. there is no extra space.

2. some of the cards when made as 1gb wont pass the quality control for a 1gb stick (too many bad sectors type o thing). this means it has to be rebranded as the next option down or binned althogether. in other words, some of the memory sticks you buy could have 'unofficial' extra space on it because there wasnt enough good extra space to make it the card it was supposed to be.

i suspect option 2 could be likely, but i think it will be limited to a small number o f cards. it would be a good idea to try doing an integrity check on a resized card, so writing a load of files to it till its full, and seeing if you can read everything that is supposed to be on it ok.

Yeah, that sounds like the most plausable scenario.

Ehh, if you read through it carefully, it says that u have to use the sony ericsson K750i Mobile or Sony ericsson W800i Mobile, this so called unallocated partition is not visible with your sony psp. Also seems to only work with Sandisk cards.

Guys, I have the REAL explaination for why there's extra memory on the 512 MB stick, and possibly the 1GB stick.

When you normally format the 512 stick, you have like 468 MB of usable space, now when you try this method, in the Windows Disk Managment utility, you will see that there is an extra partion that is not used and is about 480 MB.

The explaination for this is very simple, that second partion is a CLONE of the first partion that you are using. It is there for a very simple reason, to back up your data, anything you copy to your memory stick gets cloned to the second partion.

So whenever your data gets corrupted, all you have to do is format the memory stick, and DONT write anything to it, then use a data recovery tool, and you will be able to recover the data that was on your memory stick before it was corrupted.

Look all, it doesn't really matter anyways, the psp will recognize the card as being corrupt anyways when you repartition it, it'll just tell you to format it using the psp. Trust me i tried it.

Would it be possible to make some kind of program to allow the partition to be read from? Or would that require some kind of driver or firmware update.

P.S. I'm running XP!
.. even tho you have EXPERT as you title.. to not know that diskmanager is in CONTROL PANEL > ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS > COMPUTER MANAGEMENT

then STORAGE > DISK MANAGEMENT in the window that pops up..

sounds hellishly n00by

.. oh and you can also get there directly by typing compmgmt.msc or diskmgmt.msc in the runbox and hit enter.. but thats for "experts" only :P

Current products available in the industrial channel use NAND flash memory. It is important to
understand the NAND memory architecture to gain insight into the wear leveling mechanism.
Each memory chip is divided into blocks. A block is an array of memory cells organized as
sectors. The number of blocks and sectors vary from product to product. The minimum unit for a
write or read operation is a page (or sector). The minimum unit for an erase operation is a block.
Physical blocks are logically grouped into zones. For the current technology, a typical zone size is
4 MB. However, this may change from product to product. Wear leveling is done within a zone.
The current firmware does not spread the wear across the capacity of the card. Each zone has
about 3% additional “spare blocks” beyond what is assigned to meet the logical capacity of the
flash card. This group of blocks is commonly referred to as the “Erase Pool”.
With the introduction of SanDisk’s Write-before-Erase architecture, each time a host writes data
to the same logical address (CHS or LBA), data is written into a newly assigned, empty physical
block from the “Erase Pool”. The intrinsic nature of writing to a new physical location each time a
logical address is written to is the basis for wear leveling found in SanDisk cards. This action
spreads the writes over the zone, thus greatly extending the overall life of the card. The
methodology of using a large number of physical addresses to manage a smaller logical address
table allows for rotation of the physical addresses among the entire group of physical blocks
within a zone. The resulting wear leveling optimizes the effective life of the media and avoids
prematurely reaching the end of life on frequently written to host addresses.
When a card detects that a block has reached the end of its useful life, it removes that block from
the blocks that are available for write operations. The result is a reduction of the size of the erase
pool. This does not affect the capacity of the card as seen by the host. When the pool of blocks
available for write operations has been exhausted due to wear, the card will reach the end of its
useful life for write operations.
i would say that your using the Erase Pool portion this can not be good for the card

The erase pool is simply a backup of space that will go into effect when your real space has been used to its lifetime. From what I understand.

It seems fine to be able to use the extra space, with the same chances you would take in overclocking a CPU. It makes it better but reduces lifetime.
