Default Another Bricked PSP

UhOh!, My days of firmware fun are over, I've bricked a PSP by editing the
opening_plugin.rco file.
I edited a string "anim_month_01" to all zeros hoping this would prevent loading of
the waves pattern, but now the opening screen/sound plays, but the PSP gets stuck
before the menu appears, and all I see is the waves moving against my wallpaper
which is a plain black image.
I would take a snapshot, but I am unable to run software on it
If only I could run PSPset again it would be able to be fixed. Oh well.

ps, I do have another 1.50 unit, but was hoping of course, not to have to
use it until my other one died of natural causes.
Cheers, Art.

Hardware - yes, Firmware - Not touching it again now I've change the bootsound
and wallpapers of my other PSP.

I noticed once I changed the wallpapers on my new unit, the icons sort of became
messed up with big dodgy looking highlights around them.
There is no difference between the firmware of the two units that I am aware of
since I used the same firmware file to downgrade them both.
I doubt that a newer version of PSPset would be doing anything differently when it
comes to changing wallpapers... ???

Well at least I have a spare PSP battery now, and the unit that is bricked had a dead
pixel screen. The unit I was saving has no visible screen defects.

B4 NE1 else says it...
This would have been prevented if I had bothered to learn how to use one of the
external firmware launchers that tests firmware changes prior to writing to flash.
I knew what I was doing.

I must remain positive about bricking my PSP as silly as it sounds.
It's either put on the Sony hat and play games or do different things.

You make it sound as if playing games is a bad thing

It would serve my purposes to disassemble it myself.
The reason I had two units was to ensure availability of another 1.50 PSP unit
in case of failure of the first (presumeably because the LCD backlight died or something).

Unfortunately, the best part to have is the one that's busted.
I would look into reflashing the chip if it wasn't so physicaly hard to work with.

For some people, yeah, but I don't see donating usefull parts as contributing to the
cause of ensuring that I have at least a single working unit, which could be an important part of my own personal development.

Maybe your not out of look because i have had a look at the opening_plugin.rco and the "anim_month_01" bit there is 12 one for each month so when the month changes so in febuary the opening_plugin.rco will open "anim_month_02" and not "anim_month_01" so then technically your psp should start up again and you can reflash the the opening_plugin.rco with pspset again. i am not sure if my theory will wok but jus hang on theres only a week or so to wait. Hope this works again as i have have bricked psp's with psp set.

ah well that really sucks to hear i'd never go that far myself and edit something like that. A bricked PSP is not always a bad thing though as now its bricked you dont mind using it for something else like hardware mods etc... Is it not still in warrenty?

Doesn't putting homebrew n stuff on your psp invalidate your warranty???

I don't want to sound as if I blame PSPset.
I edited the file myself with a hex editor and used PSP set to do the flashing.

I wish I could advance the time on it to see... but I'm not so sure it will make a
difference. I don't think the PSP has checked the time at that early stage of a cold boot.
I have thought about fluctuating power to the unit in the hope of getting it to glitch
and possibly skip areas of firmware code. This also runs the risk of corrupting memory
even further.

It does its one of the first thing it checks because it needs to find out which month colour to load. If you have noticed when It says "Sony Computer Entertainment" when it boots the colour at the bottom of the screen represents the month colour.

Not when it says Holy **** as the coldboot sound and there's no way to get rid of it
while it's bricked That's proof that the firmware has been altered.
Quote:

There is no sound after the coldboot sound is over. The wave animation keeps playing
against my image background, but the only button that works is the one to adjust
screen brightness. There is also no sleep mode, it needs the 10 second switch off
every time.

Sorry PSP767.. I posted B4 I saw that reply.
You might be right I don't know.. it is enough to convince me to keep in in one peice until next month.

The image for every month is plain black so I don't know if it's loaded or not.
I did that with PSPset.. made plain black images and loaded them as wallpapers.

If no image is loaded I think the screen would still be black.

I should be able to test to see whay will happen with a firmware launcher since
I can adjust the time on my working PSP.

As luck would turn out you are absolutely correct!

I have verified this with the latest MPH firmware launcher and my 1.50 altered firmware.
It is going to start working again in February, then I can fix it properly.
PPhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eewwwww!

Now I have MPH firmware launcher set up, I can play around with firmware in a safer way.
Cheers, Art.

Hey the safest thing to do is get a warrenty on your psp when you buy it, when you get it used at ebgames you get a 6 month warrenty, so if "ANYTHING" happens to it you can just take it in for a new one. My friend has gone through 4 psp's lmao, and each one he gets comes w/ v1.5 so i did the same thing, and now i am not worried about bricking my psp. -_-
