Default PSPrar or PSPzip?

I've been trying to find somekind of decompression software that will run straight of my PSP.

The obvious benifit would be to be able to install homebrew downloaded via WiFi without the need of a computer.

I've browsed dl.qj.net, and didn't see anything that looked like it would do that, and searching for zip and rar related stuff in the forum brings oodles of homebrew installation related noodles.

Has there ever been a project that set out to bring this feature to the PSP?
And:
Is there any reason why it wouldn't be possible?

I could see why decompression might be hard to do.. The complexities boggles the mind!!

Thats a pretty good idea although it may be difficult to create a program to extract .rar files due to copyright reasons etc. and since WinRAR isn't free.

I suppose those could be the sabotaging factors.
Browsing through winrar-rog.com, the official WinRAR webpage, I found something interesting though.
UnRAR Source, Portable UnRAR source code (unrarsrc-3.5.3.tar.gz)

So basicly as long as the prog doesn't create RAR files, ROG won't have a problem with "PSPrar".

Exciting stuff..

Does it run ON the PSP? and does it DEcompress files?
If it's a pc app, i prefer (and pay for) WinRAR.

UPDATE: nevermind the questions. I googled and found that it was a GNU LGPL compression prog that can compress/decompress ZIP files, and decompress RAR files. It has source code that can be found HERE.
So the good news is that if someone does pick up this project, there is alot of source material to base it on.

Thats good then, at least it's legal to make software to extract them! It would be cool for a program to be able to extract gzip files and tar files on the psp aswell but then again, these aren't as popular as .rar or .zip files.:icon_smil

Hey, if homebrew was ever distributed in those formats, the prog would have to support it

Another stealth request for software? Shame on you.
Seriously though, think about it for a minute: the PSP is not a personal computer.
Now, when you UNCOMPRESS those files you're actually wasting MORE space with:

a) A copy of the file in compressed format
b) The full uncompressed version

In other words, you're actually wasting space and will run into problems. Any program that makes use of it would also have to DELETE the uncompressed file when it's finished and no one will want to code that garbage in and possibly cause their code to crash time after time.

Only time will tell if someone releases a unzip/unrar program. It's definately possible as the snes emus are able to access zipped roms. Sorry dude, you (and I) will just have to wait. I'd love to see this built into TedZero!

Nothing you said makes sense.
the same goes for the pc. Why do you use it on the pc and not the psp? If you think it would suck, then don't use it. Homebrew is 5megs and the most now a days. A 32meg will have lots of room. Besides there are bigger memory sticks now. Just don't knock something that is a good idea.
And yes the program should give you the option to delete the source file or to keep it.

But in all reality, this would be built into some kind of shell. So you can delete the stuff yourself.

You meant 'delete the compressed file' right? Well, I don't contest that.
This program (if ever developed) wouldn't be used for extracting big files the way i see it.
I envision someone browsing, oh, let's say PSPUpdates while on the go. Said person goes 'ZOMG!! a new version of SuperTux that is, reportedly, better than sex!'. Sadly there isn't a USB cable, let alone a public computer, in sight. Never fear: PSPrar is here!!

Most people that use their PSP for anything other than UMD gaming/video-viewing have mem sticks bigger then 256mb, and 1gig sticks aren't that uncommon. So the issue of space doesn't really stick. Naturally, even a big stick shouldn't have two copies of the same file, so yes, by all means get rid of the compressed version...

And lastly, i can see how this thread can be construed as a request, and i won't denie that i REALLY want to see this app get written. At least I'm not requesting a DWNGRADDERRZZRERR ZOMG!! TNX!!!

Personally, i'd like to put this into Eclipse in order to do precisely what you just said. Except having this code in the browser would be good because it could detect if you'd just downloaded a .zip file, and ask if you wanted to unzip it straight away.
I'm not saying that this will be in the first release, but i'd like it to be :icon_smil

AnonymousTipster, that would be smarter. God forbid I have 30 programs on my memstick that all do 1 thing. When I could just have your browser. Then space could never be an issue.

well couldnt you base the software on the winrar program files (i dont know if this is possible, but...). then people who have winrar can take the files out of the program directory in windows and run it on the psp. this way you have to buy winrar. its sorta like how transport tycoon on the psp works

That would probably be a very roundabout way of doing it, especially since the source code for unRAR is available. Might as well make a native psp version....

Well, is there a File manager program that deletes files?

Also- what about a program that can convert video files into mp4 and can be run on PSP?

Here you go then:
Tipster's Unzip Unrar.
You shouldn't have bumped up an old thread though, but here's what you need I believe. Stand alone version of Tipster's unzip-unrar. Small.
