Why does PMP use a custom media container? It also seems that all video is converted to Divx (the fourcc says divx) when put through mencoder. I speculate a few reasons, can anyone tell me the real reason?
1. The AVI container isn't open source (i think, according to wikipedia it isnt), but i wonder how free players like VLC use it. Maybe the author of PMP didn't want to be sued?
2. The PMP container somehow uses memory more efficiently.
3. To ensure that the video is smooth and does not lagg due to other codecs variable CPU requirements.
4. The author likes divx lol.
Please don't flame me if this has been posted before, just tell me the link. Also, let's not have any "just be happy with what you got" comments. I appreciate PMP, it works great. I'm just technically curious.
