PSP Keyboard [concept]
In light of a recent thread on using the psp's serial port to get GPS on a psp, i have thought of using that same port for a psp keyboard.. i mean, press a button on the keyboard, then the psp receives a binary value, and translates that into a key.. i mean it shouldnt be too hard... the gps program definatley shows this in action
That's right, it would be extremely easy in fact, and also ugly.
So ugly, I couldn't imagine anyone carrying it around :D
Another limitation that I forsee with this method is that Sony firmware is not currently
looking at the serial port for keyboard data (that we know of),
so without a driver, every homebrew app would have to be updated to support it.
I would love to see an official keyboard released for the PSP, even more so than an
official GPS since it's more likely that the GPS UMD will require a firmware update.
A homebrew keyboard would be great with a text editor for fixing LUA apps on the fly...
here can i see gps in action???
i realy would like to see a homebrew keyboard and the gps!!! :)
As for homebrew having to be updated, well u notice that when the pspsdk updates, so does the new comilations agains the pspsdk, and plus u need a osk, to update, anyone in their right mind that is concerned on creating a good project would go towards this, but in the end, u got a external thingo and its pointless...
well if you give it further thought.. take the keyboard from the Logic3[thnx NEvolution] one that got discontinued before actually releasing, change the port type, add a PSPshell that supports these binary values.. kinda like IRshell .. think about it :D
as this forum states its a concept in the making until someone actually picks up the project :D
By the way, it was Logic3 not Logitech.
I think if Logitech were the ones doing it, Sony would've probably provided the commands required just because they are more reputable.
are you requesting for this to be made?
wait...are we talking about using the USB port...or the small port next to the headphone jack that the volume/play/FWD/RWD contol plugs into that's part of the earbuds?
IMO the best idea would be a small blackberry-esque keyboard that would be part of the unit itself. meaning, that it could slide out when needed..and the entire unit (slide cariage and keyboard) would fit between the two "humps" on the back of the psp...allowing it to slide out so the back of the keyboard rests flush on the bottom of the PSP, and also allowing for it to "open" with the UMD door.
I have potential design ideas (as you can see) I just don't know enough about the coding/electronics portion of it in order to make it a marketable design.
just from holding the psp, I think a simple thumb keyboard that is anchored to the bottom center of the unit when its slid out would not only keep the apperance nice, but also not adversely affect 99% of the cases for storage.
There are IrDA keyboards that work somewhat with homebrew drivers...
Also if you search this topic I'm sure you'd find that some people has already thought of this ( http://forums.qj.net/psp-development-forum/26644-psp-keyboard-project.html )...
I have completed a keypad hardware project, and documented it for the forum.
I will post it in the development area and link it to my sig.
