Okay so the reason homebrew is pretty much peaked at the SNES emu is because of a lack of kernal access.
Now what does that mean? I head that 2.00+ have very little kernal access compared to 1.50, so does that mean 1.50 homebrew capabilies are limitless? Obviously kernal is RAM, but just how limited is it? Last edited by Stoicism; 03-17-2006 at 01:16 PM.. |

yes kernal is full acess to the psps ram and stuff ( unlike user-mode)
and yes 1.5 is only limited by the psps hardware and rhat we dont have an officeal dev kit Last edited by mnky; 03-17-2006 at 01:08 PM.. |

It's kernel. And it's what makes homebrew run faster than user-mode homebrew. And allow devs to not have a limit.

The kernel is the base of the PSP's operating system. It is what does all the work of talking between the psp's hardware and games and software. User-mode is basically a subsection of kernel mode where it allows acess to the hardware with very limited features to prevent hacking and such. In 2.0+ sony has prevented homebrew applications from accessing the kernel and limiting it to user-mode. All modern operating systems have a kernel: windows (NT/2K/XP/Vista/2K3), linux, unix, and mac. Hope I havent bored you.

So will we ever get kernel mode? Are there any kernel EBOOTs that work on v2.01+?

0/10 for answers so far :P
The kernel is the most important part of an operating system. It's basically the go between for hardware and software running on the machine (the kernel itself is software though, along with the rest of the operating system). The psp's OS uses libraries to deal with different functions/er things.. like a library for dealing with .tiff images/outputting sound etc.. these are all standard and makes things a lot easier for developers instead of coding everything in 0's and 1's. There. Not sure my explanation was much better.. edit - I hate it when you forget about writing a post, come back and do it then about 8 people have posted :P Novan got 10/10 from me
