You have to actually point it at something...

It works great on my ps2

, I don't have a sony tv to test it on though.

Be sure to switch modes to SONY WEGA/PS2 (Whatever your desired item is), and point it at the thing, and press random things. Something is bound to work, I got it to work on my sony TV.
