I found some neat BG's on the gallery page but when I went to save them they were .png files. Can I just rename them .bmp and use them or is there a diffrent way to do it?

Yes...you can convert (not just rename) them with a photo editor like Photoshop....
I think the png files are 300x170 pixels but not sure....

your BMPs should be 300x170 and 24bit to set as backgrounds with "pspersonalize"

If you are making files for you Photo folder a jpg at 480x272 works perfect...
