Default UMD Playback via homebrew?

What format are UMD movies stored on the discs in? Is it a proprietry format or just really big MP4s? If the latter, are the discs themselves region-coded or is it the video data?

Would be interesting if a homebrew app could playback UMDs from other regions... I've ended up with an out-of-zone Hellboy UMD, debating as to selling it or holding out in case it's possible

it's not mp4. It's a much better quality format. I think it was posted somewhere else on these forums. Also i don't think region code will be a problem. It's like my xbox i can play games from other regions. so you'll be able to do that on your psp.

some kind of multi region umd movie loader hack will no doubt surface this side of christmas, but i doubt it's high on any homebrew developer's list of things to do. not many people own many umd movies at the moment, and the psp is still yet to see a global release - when umd movies are much more common and more people are buying them to watch on their psps, we'll probably see a multi region hack to meet demand.

for now though, firmware issues and homebrew code execution is where it's at

I think they're in pmf format and elegedly encoded at a higher resolution than the psp screen. This format is also used on the video icons for game saves.

The Sony specs say that UMD movie format is mpeg 4 as well.
