It could be that they never intended to release things like a background changer. The may have been keeping it to themselves for their later usage, perhaps they thought it was dangerous for people to constantly switch backgrounds around (which some people innevitably would do). It could be that they just honestly never considered people would want to do that.

i reckon they will release them.

background changers, web browsers which support flash etc, basic notepad tools etc - i think all these things will be released...

...following the eu launch.

once the psp has seen a global release, official apps like some of the things we have seen as homebrew (txt file readers etc) will be included with future firmware upgrades in an effort to tempt more people to upgrade. i not only think that we'll see these programs released with firmware updates, but i also think that they will be very high quality versions of each respective app, rubbishing homebrew efforts (also these will no doubt improve over time anyhow).

they won't come all at once, but i reckon that's the bait that sony is going to use to make people upgrade.

...not that hackers won't find a way around the crippling side of these updates however

heh - a couple of years from now we'll probably all be *****ing about how the v6.5 firmware wont let us run build 5000 of Y's snes9x emulator

..or (a more sinister plot) they do not wish to release those things for they open up more possible vulnerabilities into the firmware. They've seen that hackers are really doing well exploring the PSP and do not wish to add wood to the fire intil they can stub out most of the flames.

a very good point - once again though, i reckon they could just trickle feed us the updates to get around that problem for them.

they release a web browser for example - someone finds a way of using the browser for something very naughty - sony releases a second version of the browser with the exploit patched, but this time the browser has say flash or java support, maybe it could be skinnable etc. it's no doubt going to be an ongoing battle, whatever happens...

see thats the thing about sony... they give you a firmware update now (say 1.51 or 1.52) all that does is limit you to not be able to use homebrew and emulators so it's not really helping the user... now when they start adding USEFUL feature to the firmware updates such as a browser or text viewer that's when people will start to update and it's just a matter of what you want more... homebrew or a browser... if you don't have the patience to wait until a homebrew browser comes out, people will update their firmware thus limiting the other homebrew and emulators. i myself will stay at 1.50, no matter what they come out with as far as firmware updates go, unless someone cracks the newer versions!

i wouldn't go so far as to say that, but september is sure to be the start of a stream of 'proper' system updates alongside firmware revisions
