Angry beware of sony

beware of sony,
they have, don't ask me how, put upgrades in to all of their media files and programs that are free to download on their website,
i know what your saying, this is nothing new, wright?
and who the hell would be stupid enough to use their website in the first place.
well now sony are spreading around the internet free video clips, movie trailers and mp4's which, when viewed on your psp will automatically update your firmware, no kidding.
they have literally passed these files all around the web in various formats,
be very careful when downloading files,
i have seen the result of watching a clip from kung fu hustle, not downloaded from their site, and it's not pretty.

anyone with a good taste in music and films should be relativly safe,
but anyone with a keen intrest in rachel stevens or war of the worlds........

Updating from MP4 files are impossible, also updating without telling you is IMO far to risky for Sony to try.

From a business point of view, I don't blame them. I agree it is intrusive, and I don't like it, but it makes perfect sense.

far to risky for sony to try?
yes and no.
they can't see people who are running all this illegal software having a leg to stand on in court when they mention what their doing".
yes it's wrong for them to do this, but in their oppinions we are'nt very likely to say "what the hell, i can't play all my illegal software, this is bang out of order!!!, something needs to be done"

just be careful,
as i said if you avoid all the latest hollywood film clips and chart music i'm presuming you'll be o.k.
and what i thought would be the case- sony just putting the upgrade in to software music and films which they are associated with, just isn't happening,
if sony did nothing about it imagine what nintendo are going to be like when revolution gets released with one of it's main selling points being able to play old snes games, and eveyones already doing that, but via a psp.
sony will get fried.

Do you have any proof to any of this?

Any source?

EDIT: Why would they release War of the Worlds considering they don't own any of the rights to it.

I know this will upset some people , but i can give up my NES , SNES and VBA Emus and roms , even the homebrew games .
But what upsets me is my FAVORITE homebrew is stuff like YDICT v0.1 for the PSP , All the Ebook readers and the Chinese Flashcards .

Look all i am saying is this , Japan gets these great learning programs with there consoles . And they are aimed at teaching languages such as english .
So Sony if you hear me ( and i doubt you wil :P ) PLEASE create programs that will work with you much rumored 2.0+ firmware that will do these sorts of things . Afterall , yes i do play NES ect on my PSP , but as i have said these things are not as close to my homebrew-heart as the various learning software that is being created .
Bummer .... I never really download Film Trailers and such , but i just *know* that by the Dec when all the hot games hit the shelves , 1.51=2.0 will be waitting within that killer games package .
Peace , hefehefe2000

i know they don't own the rights to war of the worlds i was just giving an example of types of clips that sony might be using(popular blockbusters), after all they aren't going to put it into a trailer for the man with the movie camera.

So, do you have any links to examples or a source of this information?

YEp... this thread is BULL****...

first of all you have to get your PSP hooked on POWER to update your firmware.... so sony would not risk a large number of PSP's to be bricked cause of low battery...

So its impossivel to watch a Mp4 and get your psp updated...

Just close this anyone!

i don't see how this is possible.

2 problems basically:

1 - implanting binaries within media files - when this is possible, the whole web is going to change as virus writers and trojan spreaders are going to have a field day - i doubt very much that sony have made this breakthrough - news like that would be everywhere - every tech site would be talking about nothing else.

2 - to upgrade firmware, don't sony say that you need to be plugged in via mains so that your power doesn't go down during the upgrade, rendering your psp useless? why would they take a chance and try a sneaky upgrade when it could mean hundreds of thousands of returns..?

sorry, but i don't buy this at all.

what are your sources?

oh, and just because someone you know said so, does not cut the mustard.

Seeing as how mp4 files don't embed executables, and for a good amount of reasons that other users have pointed out on this thread, I'm going to lock this obvious "unsubstantiated rumors" thread. If the author wants to PM a mod with any substantial proof, you can get it unlocked.
