Default My Psp Is Bricked [psp Bricker Being Spread]

User named "Zarp2000" decdided to come onto Toc2rta IRC last night and showcase that he had a new small 2d homebrew shooter.

He needed testers so I tested, I was left with a brick. This is what he said on irc:

[23:43] <Zarp2000> i dont even have a psp
[23:43] <Zarp2000> thats why i was asking you to test my bricker
[23:43] <Zarp2000>
[23:43] <Zarp2000> now i can spread it everywhere

I don't think that custom firmware can even fix it!

-CatfishD

his aliases are Zarp2000 and Zapi

hackyjack on #PSP-Hacks has been bricked, too! From Zapi!

Meh. I just trust QJ to not give me bricking programs.

The worst he could do is have QJ get some people with modchips to test all homebrew before it goes in.

It's just these stupid people.

Moral of the story: don't test random programs from random people.

There is a tool for the PC that checks the code of games for suspicious code, and also detects Flash Access Clicky here. Ive not personally tested by the way.

Also Something similar was posted on DCEmu

Quote:
We have just been informed of a new PSP Virus on the loose.

I have recieved the file and checked it for viruses, and shows as being positive. We have already heard reports of 2 bricks from this virus.

Be VERY careful of this....we dont want any one to end up with bricks... ( and yes we know of the custom firmware mods, but we dont know as of yet if it will fix what this virus does. )

As of the file I receieved.... its dressed up as a usb kxploit... but it can be changed easily to somthing else.

The folder names are SDL-TEST-5 and SDL-TEST-5%. ( though the folder names can be changed as well )

As for size of this file (the one I got sent), its % eboot is 65kb and the other ( non % ) eboot is 10 kb

or in combined total 74 kb
Im not sure if it is the same thing but I must agree people who actually want to brick psps have no life.

CatfishD, if you can, please post the MD5 sum of the bricker here so everyone can check for it.

OK I managed to get a copy of the bricker ^_^

My findings about how it bricks your PSP:
Code:
   flash0:
Firstly, it unassigns flash0:/

Code:
flash6: lflash0:0,0
Then, it reassigns flash0:/ to "flash6:/" with write access

I then see a list of folders
Code:
flash6:/kd/ flash6:/vsh/ flash0:/kd/ flash0:/vsh/ flash6:/vsh/resource/ flash0:/vsh/resource/
I think this is needed by sceIoRemove for the next bit...

Then finally a list of critical files
Code:
flash6:/kd/init.prx flash6:/vsh/etc/index.dat flash6:/kd/loadcore.prx flash6:/kd/loadexec.prx
All four of these are deleted, resulting in a guaranteed brick.

This is the same method as the old 2.00 bricker released just after the old 2.00 tiff exploit was found.

Meh ¬.¬

Jas0nUK and I analised the bricker, it's a ripoff of pspteam's 2.00 bricker
It deletes the very same files and reassign flash0:/ into flash6:/ (uneeded for an 1.50 app)

since loadcore.prx , loadexec.prx , init.prx , and index.dat are deleted your only hope is to get your psp modded to recover it.

UPDATE: Damn you Jas0n you were faster xD

So whoever it was is too lame to even write their own bricker.

Pathetic.

Still, PSPSafe should have no problem detecting it.

Hey, is is possible that we can make a custom firmware mod that kills the psp (crashes it) when wanted to write to flash? So then we just take out it of our cf's config file before writing to flash?

So this is the same (same as in same md5 hash) 2.00 bricker released 1 year ago?
I wonder cause I think I've read that the old eloader versions blacklisted it?!

Yeah. ppl need to watch out. Sum1 could easily release a 2.8 tiff "game" but it writes a tiff image as the background so your psp may semibrick. It will be in a never ending loop so when u cut it on...tiff app loads.

It would be simple, quick, and effective since the psp may use libtif to decode it regardless if it is a background.

Semi-Bricking is fixable though: http://my.qj.net/Success-How-to-Fix-.../pg/49/aid/192

He repackaged it into an EBOOT, the original one was a .bin file for the tiff image.
