It doesnt matter what firmware you have when connecting to a computer. Macs, I think, are the easiest system to put homebrew/software/etc. on. The drive icon comes up with all the directories youll need. With PCs...well im using a mac and ive used my psp at a friends house and it wasnt very pleasant.
As for games, yes. Sony is trying to stop homebrew because it could mean pirated games. Coded Arms was just released and it required a 1.5 FW upgrade.(Didnt bother me i already have that). But GTA: LC will most defidentally require an upgrade, so it is unaviodable if you like GOOD games.
I would say you should follow Sony and just give up the homebrew. There are so many other good reasons to upgrade like the new 2.0 FW will have internet and TV. I would trade homebrew for that.
