Uh oh... my one-day-old psp just bricked.
Before you jump to a conclusion - no, I didn't do something stupid like install an obviously incompatible firmware or not read the upgrade instructions VERY carefully.
I'd just gotten a psp preloaded with 3.30OE firmware. Wanting to play some of the later stuff and have better no-umd compatibility, I tried to install the firmware M33UPDATE_351.
I'd downloaded this correctly, even verified the md5 ( acff923109e08f1625195e9fb 01dbf1e ) to make sure it had downloaded correctly. When I popped it onto the stick in the /PSP/GAME150 directory and tried to run it, the screen went black and then crashed back to the XMB. Thinking it may be that the battery was less than 75% complete, and this was M33's weird way of telling me, I thought this may be why it crashed, and I charged it to 100% and then tried to run the update again. The screen went black again, but just stayed there. After 10-20 mins of no activity whatsoever (it didn't even read from the memory stick AT ALL during this time, so I figured it had crashed), I hard reset... only to find a black screen.
The exact thing that happens now after a hard reset is: Screen turns on, green power light comes on, memory stick appears to be read from for a few seconds (not sure if this is significant), then just sits there. Doesn't turn itself off, just stays like that. From what I've read, a bricked psp turns itself off and doesn't read from the memory card at all - is this correct? Holding the right trigger during boot does not enter the recovery menu as far as I can see.
I have considered making a pandora - is this the only option left to me? I don't have a psp but have a friend in another state who will try to make one and post it to me, but has no experience with doing so. I don't know anybody in my state with a psp (no, really - I live in Tasmania, Australia. Nobody lives here but sea otters).
One last thing I want to say is that I really tried to go out of my way to follow the instructions and do this the right way - but it still bricked. I guess this is just one of the few psp's that for some reason or another, works with dark alex firmware but not M33... I'm never using another M33 firmware again - does anyone have any advice for how to proceed from here?
