you will allready have eloader config file sorted.

one solution that I am looking at is to mirror the ms folder structure with . $ and ~ files at the location for the files they are for
that way I could have Show/Hide Extension and Extensions

the icons are tga but the ".tga" part is deleted.

now changes from show/hide extension to show/hide extensions and only creates one .XS_Store file not loads of . files for every file
An extra option is getting added as well, Reset Icons & Clean Up (wording of these options may change on final build)
These will only be enabled in BETA 1
Build testers will be given a 1.7.1a Special Edition
where these options will be enabled
this works by removing all . files
But yes they is a but, you can apply to be a build tester for 1.7.1a

and you will be able to test it with these two options enabled, but remember to back up your ms as you are testing
