II. INSTALLING HOMEBREW ON YOUR PSP
1) Introduction The very first thing you need to do is find out what firmware version your PSP is. To do this, turn on your PSP, go to Settings > System Settings > System Information and click "X". It will say "System Software Version" 1.0, 1.5, 1.51, 1.52, 2.0, 2.01, 2.50, 2.60, 2.70, 2.71, 2.80, 2.81, 2.82, 3.00, 3.01, 3.02, 3.03, 3.10, 3.11, 3.30, 3.40, 3.50, 3.51, 3.52, 3.60, 3.70, 3.71, 3.72, 3.73, 3.80, 3.90, 3.93, 3.95, 4.00, 4.01 and 4.05.
PSP Slim: If you are using a PSP Slim, you will not have a firmware under 3.60. To take advantage of homebrew and what it offers, you will have to use Pandora to upgrade to a custom firmware.
PSP Classic: If your PSP is version 1.0 to 1.50 you will have the ability to run applications, games and emulators that use the 1.50 kernel (without the help of other applications or hacks). If you are on a firmware ranging from 2.00 to 3.00 you can use eLoader to load most 1.50 kernel applications (however, read on and you will find out why that is now redundant).
Both Classic and Slim: All firmwares can take advantage of Pandora , a universal hack that allows the upgrading to a custom firmware or the downgrading to an official firmware.
2) Installing Homebrew on a PSP with 1.0 Installing Homebrew applications is actually a whole lot easier then it sounds. For the most part, it's all just "Drag & Drop." Although some emulators may require you to rename ROMs, or place them in specific folders, but you can read about that in the Emulators section.
Plug your PSP into your computer via a USB cable.
Turn on your PSP and navigate to Settings > USB Connection and press "X". Your computer should then automatically detect the PSP.
Go to My Computer > Removable Disk (F:) (where F is the drive letter your computer assigns to the PSP). You are now browsing the contents of your memory stick.
You should see a folder named PSP. Open the PSP folder and create a GAME folder (if there isn't one already).
You will then need to create a folder for each homebrew emulator or game you want to put on your memory card (make sure you use the 1.0 eboot, the one with only one folder, and NOT the 1.5 eboot, the one with two folders) . [picture] Note: Most homebrew emulators and games come zipped in folders, in that case you just have to drag the folder into PSP/GAME/.
Now, exit USB Connection, and go over to the Game Icon, go down to the filled in Memory Stick Duo Icon, go over to a homebrew game, and launch it.
3) Installing Homebrew on a PSP with 1.5 Connect your PSP to your Computer
Navigate to X:\PSP\GAME (where the drive letter X is your PSP's drive letter)
Most homebrew today comes in KXploited form. If it's not in KXploit form (meaning that there aren't two different folders, both containing an EBOOT.PBP, and one folder having a % in its name), then you must convert it to KXploited form. To convert homebrew into KXploited form:Download and install SeiPSPTool
Using SeiPSPTool, click the Export Eboot Icon (the one with the big green cross)
Enter the name of the homebrew you are converting in the name box
If the EBOOT.PBP is standalone, meaning it doesn't have any folders with it or anything, click the "..." button and click "from file", and navigate to the Eboot. If the EBOOT.PBP is in a folder, with other files, click the "..." button and click "from whole folder", and navigate to the folder.
Now, set your PSP drive in the dropdown box
Optionally, check "Hide Corrupted Icon from List", and click Generate.
The homebrew is now installed on your PSP! (You may skip the next step)
If the homebrew was already in KXploited form, extract both folders to the GAME folder (so the folders are: X:\PSP\GAME\[Appname] and X:\PSP\GAME\[Appname]%)
Now, quit USB mode, navigate to Game, scroll down to the filled in Memory Stick Duo icon, and press 'X'
Navigate to your homebrew and press 'X' again.
4) Installing Homebrew on a PSP using Pre-made Eboot packs If you want to skip all the do-it-yourself and download a pre-converted pack of emulators, you can get it here . Simply extract all the folders in that zip, connect your PSP via USB, and put them in PSP/GAME/. Note that these emulators are updated very frequently, and when new versions come out you will still be stuck with the older ones. Do not post on our forums asking for people to convert them for you, you can read on to learn to do it yourself, it's quite simple. You can also find Pre-Made EBOOT files for the 1.5 KXploit here . Note: Most of these packs don't have the latest updated homebrew in them.
Go to Legion120802's Pre-made eboot thread
-I recommend Legion120802's thread since it is the most up-to-date thread.
Search for the hombrew game/application that you desire
Once you have located the hombrew, download it
Once downloaded, extract the contents (WinRAR is sometimes required).
Two folders should appear (one with a % sign and one without)
Copy these two folders to your PSP/Game directory
If you have roms to install, scroll down to view the install directory for each emulator
Enjoy your hombrew!
5) Installing Homebrew on a PSP with 2.0-2.71 I recommend you upgrade to a custom firmware via Pandora . However, if you do not have access to/cannot afford a Pandora's battery then do the following:
Note: This method doesn't run ALL homebrew, because some kernel mode and other functions aren't working properly. If you want to run homebrew perfectly, downgrade to 1.5.
Download and install eLoader 0.99 TIFF:
Now, navigate to X:\PSP\GAME (where X is your PSP's drive letter)
Extract your 1.0 Eboot into the a folder in the GAME folder (X:\PSP\GAME\[appname]). 1.0 Eboot's only have one eboot and one folder, and have no folders with percent signs. If your Eboot is only in KXploited (1.5, 2 foldered form), then follow these steps:Download and install SeiPSPTool
Click on the "Convert 1.5-> 1.0 Icon
Click the "..." button, and select the folder with the % sign
Click the 2nd "..." button, and select the folder without the % sign
Click convert
Copy the folder without the % sign to your GAME folder
Scroll over to the Photo tab, and open the TIFF loader. If it just shuts off your PSP, make sure you have a custom wall paper set, reboot your PSP, and try again
Scroll to the homebrew you want to load, and press 'X'
6) Installing Homebrew on a PSP with 2.01-2.60 (Method B) I recommend you upgrade to a custom firmware via Pandora . However, if you do not have access to/cannot afford a Pandora's battery then do the following:
Note: Requires Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories to operate
Download the latest eLoader: Auto-installer or Zip file for non-Windows users
Run the installer .exe file, or extract all of the files to their proper locations.
Download a 2.01+ compatible eboot, availible in this list .
Preferably, you want the folder without the % in it's name, extract that folder to X:\PSP\GAME\ (where X is your PSP drive)
Load GTA:LCS
If eLoader hasn't autoloaded, hit start, go to load game, and load the eLoader in slot 5.
Once at the eLoader menu, press X to begin an eboot.
Holding down Start+L+R for one second quits the current game.
Pressing start at the eLoader menu returns you to the XMB (PSP's main menu)
Note: If it fails and shuts-off, many retries may be necessary in order to successfully launch the homebrew.
7) Installing Homebrew on a PSP with 2.7 or 2.71 I recommend you upgrade to a custom firmware via Pandora . However, if you do not have access to/cannot afford a Pandora's battery then do the following:
Note: This does flash files to your PSP's flash, so there is a slight risk of a brick, although none have been reported. 2.71 under HEN-C can't run standard Eboots, so it is suggested that you set up Devhook to emulate 1.5. A guide on how to do this is located here
First, download HEN-C here
Inside the .rar file, double click on the MS_ROOT folder. Now, with your PSP connected to your PC, navigate to the root directory, and extract the contents of MS_ROOT there.
Now, exit USB Mode, and go over to the Photo Icon, but don't press 'X'
Press Triangle, and go to Slideshow. If the screen flashes green or blue, then the files were flashed successfully. If it flashes red, just redo this step.
8) Installing Homebrew on a PSP with 2.80 I recommend you upgrade to a custom firmware via Pandora . However, if you do not have access to/cannot afford a Pandora's battery then do the following:
Note: This method doesn't run ALL homebrew, because some kernel mode and other functions aren't working properly.
Download and install eLoader 0.995 TIFF:
9) Installing Homebrew on a PSP with 2.81 - 3.03 I recommend you upgrade to a custom firmware via Pandora . However, if you do not have access to/cannot afford a Pandora's battery then do the following:
You need to first update to 3.03. Link .
Download 3.03 HEN Link 1. Copy all contents inside MS_ROOT to the root of your memory stick.
2. Load GTA
3. When you run the program, you'll see a colored screen that can be one of two colors: If the PSP freezes or gets a red screen try again
* Red: the files couldn't be written to the flash (it happens a few times).
* Pale Blue: The files were written successfully, and HEN is active. After that, the xmb will
be rebooted. Now you can run the homebrew in format prepared for 2.71. (see details above).
Note that a pale blue screen will appear again every time the PSP reboots with HEN active.
10) Installing Homebrew on a PSP with 2.71 SE,3.xx OE, or 3.xxM33 SE and OE are largely outdated, so I recommend you first upgrade to the latest M33 firmware. Details on doing so can be found here .
Connect your PSP to your computer, and navigate to X:\PSP (where X is the drive letter of your PSP).
Make sure that you have these folders (these folders are necessary, you can't launch homebrew without them). Place all homebrew into its corrisponding folder:X:\PSP\GAME: The regular folder found in official firmwares. Homebrew in this folder may be non-kxploited OR kxploited, it doesn't matter. By default, 1.00/1.50 homebrew doesn't work; we configure it to work following this method:Turn your PSP off, and turn it back on, holding the 'R' trigger button. The PSP will enter recovery mode.
Scroll to configuration, and press X.
Scroll to Game folder homebrew, and press X until it displays "(currently: 1.50 Kernel)".
X:\PSP\GAME150: This is where you put all other homebrew. Homebrew in this folder may be non-kxploited OR kxploited, it doesn't matter.
X:\PSP\GAME271 (where 271 corresponds to your custom firmware): This is where you put homebrew designed to run with HEN-C (Homebrew Enabler Revision C)
X:\ISO: You just need this folder
Now, shut off your PSP and reboot it, this time holding 'R'. Your PSP will boot into recovery mode. Scroll to Configuration, press 'X'. Scroll to Game folder homebrew, and press 'X' until it displays "(currently: 1.50 Kernel)". Scroll to back, and press 'X'. Scroll to exit, and press 'X'. Your PSP will reboot.
Go to the XMB (PSP Main Menu), and go over to the game icon, down to the bottom of the list (the filled in Memory Stick Duo Icon), and press 'X'
Scroll to any homebrew you want to play, and press 'X' again
Most homebrew should work. If some don't, you can try to use the 2.71 SE-A Eboot Fixer
Some homebrew may still not work, you'll have to wait until the next revision of the firmware
11) Installing Homebrew on a PSP with 3.10 - 3.50 I recommend you upgrade to a custom firmware via Pandora . However, if you do not have access to/cannot afford a Pandora's battery then do the following:
You need to first update to 3.50. Link
Download 3.50 HEN Link 1. Copy the PSP folder inside MS_ROOT to the root of your memory stick.
2. Load Lumines
12) Note to 3.51 and Higher Users You currently can't run Homebrew or downgrade unless you have a Pandora's Battery. More Information on the subject can be found Here
