Since the Nintendo DSi is already released, which has 2 Cameras... bigger screen, sd card slot, 256MB Internal Memory and maybe better/faster processor and graphics processor, thinner, DSIShop AND already runs homebrew (hacked) but the past flashcarts don't work anymore and no gba slot
. The new PSP.. uhh.. mic? The PSP is still cool and fun though.

Personally I think its plenty set apart form the DS.... the DS has exclusives and even ports with new features to support the Cool DS hardware :P (jk)
On a different note it think its not so much slowing down but maturing....if you look at most of the posts on various homebrew/hack sites most releases are updates to older releases, more homebrew utilities vs homebrew games... |

Lol, I think it's dying, or at the very least slowing down. I gave up on some of the projects I was working on, because it doesn't seem that theres much of an audience these days, and all in all I'd just be recirculating the same old stuff that's probebly been made 5 times before. Still, whilst I think the homebrew scene is dying, I still use my PSP everyday. If anything, I use it more now than when I first got it.

Why it's 'Dying' in Retail:
1) PSP homebrew unlocking was mostly software based when the PSP scene started, meaning no need to buy special hardware unlike the DS (this has changed recently with the pandora) (already mentioned) Therefore more hacked PSPs exist out there than DS's with flashcarts. #1 piracy 2) Game companies are cheap. When designing an online game they rather do everything client side. This puts minimal stress on server resources. But, with the large number of homebrew enabled PSP users - this serves as a threat to the client-side model because it's so easy to cheat in. #online cheating 3) The PSP's screen and CPU power call for a detailed game, and a detailed game takes longer to make due to more detail needing to be filled. This is why for every four DS games made, one PSP game is made. This means that a lot of cash must be spent on a game until any profit is seen, and most companies don't want to take that risk. So they work on systems which require a shorter development cycle #3 rising development costs Why it's 'Dying' in Homebrew: 1) Blame the iPhone. PSP devs are running to the iPhone because they rather get paid for their work. 2) School takes up too much time 3) PSPs are easy to break and some devs are too lazy to repair the damn thing Mozilla/5.0 (Danger hiptop 3.4; U; rv:1.7.12) Gecko/20050920 |

Really? If you're gonna say something, at least put some more effort into it...
Honestly, though, with DSi coming out, Nintendo fans will continue supporting their products, and Sony fans will continue supporting their products. Sure the DS may have a bigger array of fans, but us sony kids are still wanting something aside from the usual.

i think its slowing down for sure
the psp has been hacked to almost its full potential, when the Utopia project comes out then we will be able to completely customize the psp. i remember back when new exploits were coming out, new apps, hacks, now its not much new, a good game here, a neat hack there, but most of the hacks are just "pimping" the psp which i think is slightly old now because the psp can be easily "pimped" with ptf themes and there is nothing really new out for it, just different. i have been around since 1 month after the psp was released and i used the original POC custom firmware, 1.5 kxploit, 1.0 dowgrader/homebrew, etc. im just waiting for something new to come out (mainly Utopia) |

Also, DSi has nothing to do with it. It's just a new model of Nintendo's DS with the same ****ty games. Seriously, Nintendo has dropped faithful gamers for old people because it's more profitable. Stick with your SNES.

Replace "ignorant" with "between the ages of 6 and 10" and that statement is more in-line. LOL

just because it's an interesting device with a wide audience. I will always love the PSP, but I reckon there's about a quarter of the original homebrew community left. |

I'd say it is. There are only see a handful of decent game releases in the US the past few months and they're slowly dwindling. All I can see coming out in january in the US are four games, total. The only one worth a care in the world is Star Ocean: Second Evolution.
SANiK is right and I hate to admit it but piracy is completly and utterly ruined the PSP. Most developers won't even touch it because of it. If you google psp piracy you can find an article that reports finding 269,000 downloads of Burnout Dominator from single torrent site. The friends and people I know barely show an interest in the psp anymore. It's a shame too since I still love it. Even though I barely play anything other than Dracula X once in a while it still sees alot of use from me thanks to cfw. I use my psp as an audiobook player, gps, and comic book / manga reader everyday. |

i think sony forgets that the portable game market is mostly comprised of casual gamers. Lets be honest, if i wanted to pass time I would play my PSP, if i wanted to get some intense gameplay in, I would play my 360. The Nintendo DS did so well because Nintendo didn't stray from portable gameplay for casual gamers; no music, no video, no web browser, no memory stick, just good games and that was it. Sony tried to diversify the PSP so much, that instead of being a gaming device, it tries to be an all in one media device, and in the end, fails at all of those things. Why would i listen to music on my PSP when it has no search/sort feature and who doesnt have an ipod nowadays anyway. Why would I browse the the internet at painstakingly slow speed? I think sony should have done away with the web browser and the XMB and the need for a memory stick and focused on more power and better graphics in games instead of spreading the PSPs capabilities over 5 or 6 different functions.

The Psp´s homebrew scene as managed to release lots of magnificent work over the past 4 years. We have great Emulators, and people are still working on some of them. Including the N64 Emulator and the Game Boy Advance emulator, which will hopefully soon be released with wifi support. Maybe its just that we have pushed the Psp to its physical limits. That everything possible got already archieved, and that there is nothing new to discover? Its natural though that people get bored of a device after some time has passed. And the hype for new consoles like the Iphone touch and the Pandora Handheld do the rest.

I agree with you Joseph Stalin Two.
To me PSP is not dying, people may just feel that all hacking stuff is slowing down right now but it's normal : there is almost nothing left to hack. A lot, lot, lot, lot of stuff has been produced since the 2.00 downgrade that could BRICK UR PSP NOOOH. Now you can : - Play all games you want for free - Play all homebrews you want - PSN support - Flash recovery - Recovery - etc etc So, no, PSP is not dying, PSP has reached an almost perfect state. What i don't understand is why so many people always talk about the Wii or the DS when we're talking about the PSP. Nintendo has NOTHING to do with the feeling that the PSP scene is slowing down. Nintendo was only fun @ SNES and that's why so many of us just loves to play SMB3 on their psp than playing all new kido-nintendo-gamo with mathematics, cooking, and ****.

I guess you can say its dying but its still a bit slower compared to what it used to be, devs are always looking for the next thing to work with, right now the iPod touches/iPhones seem to be the thing that everyone wants to be a part of. I know cause I'm there as well.
Lets just say! *Doesn't mean it will happen The PS3 finally got hacked, most devs would want to go to the PS3 scene because its new and fresh and devs want to see what they can do with the PS3 since they have pretty much done everything else in the other scenes(PSP, iPhones...) Everything has to die sooner then later. |
