This is a discussion on Pokemon (remade for psp) Request/Speculation within the PSP Speculation forums, part of the PSP Development, Hacks, and Homebrew category; haha. It was a bad choice to speak in first person. I meant figuratively speaking of course...

Um, I might have to leave EVs and possibly IVs out.
I don't understand them completely and can't really find a good explanation on them. I'm definitely going to leave EVs out of the demo, I kind of understand IVs enough to add them in. If anyone can help explain them to me, I'd appreciate it very much. - I actually did this a while back, I was wondering what you guys would think of my "Pokemon Info" screen... Does anyone think anything is missing, or have any suggestions? ![]() Obviously it's missing some of the field's info, but that was a snapshot of before I had all of each Pokemon's information into the game. I don't really understand them like to a science but...
IVs are perminent/unchangable parameters that determine what bonuses/penalties a Poke has in addition to their default stat growth. For example, say at lv 100 Pikachu has Attack 150 and Defense 80 (fake numbers, but you know this). If that Pikachu had good IVs for attack but bad IVs for defense, then this lv 100 Pika would have Attack 190 and Defense 55. It could also have good IVs for both or bad IVs for both, but you get the idea. IVs are determined at random when a Pokemon is caught, although if you breed continuously (make the baby have a baby have a baby etc), the latest offspring is more likely to have better IVs than the parents before it. EVs are a different story. Like IVs, they are also parameters that determine bonuses/penalties towards a Poke's stat set. Unlike IVs though, these can be trained and basically "level up". Here's how they work: just like Pokemon give a different amount of exp if defeated, they also give another set of exp meant for the EVs when defeated. Instead of covering all stats though, certain Pokemon give exp for certain stats. For example, beating up Rattatas for hours on end will make your Speed EVs level up, while whailing on Vileplums will up your Special Atk EVs. A Poke's EVs come into play when they level up.. so say Pikachu turned lv 15 and has a lv 2 EV for Speed. Instead of gaining 4 for Speed (or 6 if he has good IVs ;D), he'll now gain say an extra +2 for that stat.

Thank you Nicky!
I understood IVs pretty good. The last bit you posted finally made EVs click for me. I didn't know EVs do their thing once the Pokemon levels up. I have a few questions though, IVs are random (0-31) but do they have a limit like EVs do? I read somewhere that a Pokemon can have only a certain number of EVs all added up. Are IVs like this? Does a wild Pokemon have some random set of EVs already, or do they all start at 0? Also, I think that it's like for every 4 EVs in a stat, it ups the stat by 1. But level can affect this somehow. Like, a level 50 Pikachu will need 8 attack EVs in order to gain an extra attack stat. I found this, but don't really understand it.. Quote:
I know you said you don't know much about them, but lately my internet's crapping out. I was barely even able to load this page to submit this.. So I can't really research anymore.. Last edited by chrisp6825; 03-25-2009 at 12:16 AM.. |

does this help?
"Some percentage chances may be off by fractions of a percent. Unfortunately, the games are currently inconsistent about chances; accuracies are integers like 80%, but other chances like move effects can actually be calculated as 204 out of 256, or 79.6%. Similarly, in RBY, move accuracies were all out of 256 but had a maximum of 255; thus any 100% accurate move was actually 99.6%." ~http://veekun.com/dex |

Thanks, I have already read this before, but I forgot about it. Thanks for bringing it back to my attention.
Um, I was able to look at bulbapedia's article on EVs and I'm pretty sure I understand it fully now. Basically, EV points are given in battle, then when the Pokemon levels up, it takes the number of EV in a stat and divides it by 4. The result is added to that stat. A Pokemon can only have a max of 510 EV points, and 255 in a single stat. So two stats could be maxed out (with 252 being the highest number evenly divisible by four), while another stat could get 6 EV points (or one stat point). And they're gain by an EV base. Like, if a pikachu battled an eevee (suppose eevee had only 3 hp base EV) when pikachu defeated the eevee, it would gain 3 EV points for the hp stat. Did I get anything wrong, or leave anything out? |

Ya, sadly.. Not an actual date still though.
April's coming up faster, and things with school are getting faster (TAKS crap). So, it's hard for me to get any time to work on it. The weekend's coming up though, so I'll get quite a bit of time to work on it then. This is where I am right now.. I just remade my battle system to work like it should (with stats and stuff) I need to add in at least a few more items (this wont take long) I haven't added in any moves yet (right now, every pokemon uses rock throw haha. this might take a bit of time) I need to finish the inside of the first towns houses (this wont take long at all) I need to make the next town (this wont take long, but I have to make the dialogs so.. a bit longer than above) I still need to get images for each Pokemon (so far I have eevee, geodude, ekans, and bellsprout. this will take a bit of time, not too much though) Putting the whole database thing really took up a lot more time than I realized. Sorry it's coming along so slow guys. |

If he wanted people to beta test it he would tell you!
the more you ask for it the less likley he will give it to you. he will annouance a beta and tell people to test it when it is ready to be beta tested so lets do him a favour and just wait untill its ready! |

we said we are ready for beta testing and we support you...we are not asking for beta testing...the last thing we want is to push the developer and throw stress on him...and if your read all 11 pages you will understand

So I figured out how to implement a frame skip into the game.
Before, the main world map was only getting ~20 fps. Now, I've got it getting up to ~45 fps. So I'm going to put a limit on it of 30 fps, so it can run smoothly without small "lags" or speed-ups. Should I put an option in the options menu to take this off and let it run how you want? If I did, I would have to limit it in multiplayer. By the way, this was a problem I've been constantly trying to fix or find a solution to. I was always thinking it could make or break the game. I suppose I'll let out a beta thing to like 3 or so people. I just don't want it floating around, or people making a big deal out of it. I'd like people keep looking forward to the main release and be a bit impressed. |

I wouldn't put an option in. I would just make it a standard speed. If people got used to it being faster then when they go to multiplayer they might not like it and get mad or something. 30FPS would be just fine.

I agree with cory here i dont feel there should be a choice as it would be less confusing for people who would rather just play the game. I must admit chrisp that you are definatly to this and from the progress you have made in such a short time it really does show!

I'm not gonna be able to work on the game so much for a while, so I decided to just go ahead and release to a few people.
Once school ends I'll have more time to work on it. I'm still not sure when I'll have the demo version ready though, sorry. Last edited by chrisp6825; 04-06-2009 at 03:09 PM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |
