Hack the games not the firmware!!!
come on guys, I'm a programmer, not a hacker, but I understand enough to realise that if you keep finding exploits in the firmware, Sony will just keep patching it and forcing upgrades thorugh games.
Also just like on the original PSX, the games themselves will get smart and detect incorrect firmwares/chips (remember dino crisis and modchips?)
On the xbox you installed a new system dashboard and exploit to the HD so it would work on boot.
However to install that without a modchip required a buffer overflow attack to run the unsigned code that was the installer.
Splinter Cell, 007 and Mechwarrior could all be used/exploited in this way.
They patched Splinter Cell in later releases, closed up the hole. But even with the latest xboxes if you have the older version of spliter cell the exploit remains usable, because it's not in anything Microsoft have direct control over.
So please, please, please, please...
Stop this FW hacking, stop the useless downgraders. Both sony and games manufacturers can detect and bypass these...
Concentrate on finding an overflow in a specific game, most probably in the save game loader, but also any code that accesses data from the MS.
Sure they can patch the game, such that *new pressings* of the UMD are closed up, but with the exploitable code in a game, on a disk, in your hand, sony can't block you out anymore....
(unless they blocked all versions of the game, but that would require a product recall, and I *really* cant see the figures adding up to make that viable for sony)
So, guys, look in the games, the UMD apps, even the UMD movies....
It was done 3 times on the xbox, and the holes were simply unclosable.
otherwise you'll just be playing tit-for-tat with sony for the entire lifespan of the console.
