I was just wondering why there is no homebrew software for usen AOL Instant Messenger server. I know theres a few websites where you have to pay $3 a month or some crap. I can't see a reason to purchase thier servies when they should be free.
Yes, I know they keep you logged in and whatever but who needs that and if you do it would be better to host it on you're own pc. Instead of giving then you're info and $36 a year. If people are making all of this other stuff why hasn't it been made yet? Sorry if this is a dumb question or has been asked a quatra zillion times I know zero about coden and programming. Just wanting to know a reason in lamens terms. Lol |

couple things, main one first:
1) this is a PSP (PlayStation Portable) forum! aim doesn't belong here! second 2) this particular forum is for discussing homebrew, hacks, and development, not lack thereof, third 3) see points 1 and 2 thank you and good night ladies and gentlemen |

1) Yes an aim client would be liked by many people here, and many people hav discussed it here before. 2) Precisely!! homebrew aim client!! 3) see points 1 and 2 as for why it's not created, it would be a little impractical, cuz the psp has no keyboard, and you'd take forever to key in a message..

It wouldn't be a port of AIM, but probably using the opensource gAIM libraries if it happens...
I thought about it, as I'm sure a lot of others have.. But it's a lot of work to get good usability and it's kinda boring to code (comparatively) to some people than other things like a game or the likes.. I'm sure we'll see it eventually...

There's actually an AIM Development API if I remember correctly. If I get a chance, I may look into writing a quick demo.

Well, personally, I think AIM, while being a nice addition, is not that efficient on the PSP. It takes far too long to type messages, especially when im used to having hasty conversations. Simply put, I would far rather use AIM on my computer. For all of those who dont know about it, try www.webaim.com. They have a PSP compatible version of the site, and its completely free. I used it for a while before realizing that the browser just plain sucks.

I don't think this would be too hard to do. I think that the hardest part would be connecting to the servers and sending/receiving the correct SNAC packets. I wrote a function that will 'roast' whatever text is inputted into it(password), so then the password can be sent to the servers. I have found lots of documentation on the AIM protocol as well, if anyone would like the links, contact me.

For some people it would be more useful then 99% of the apps currently on the PSP. Sure its harder to type and see the user list but look how many cell phones have it. It would be great for short messages untill you decided to go back to the PC. No one said you had to have you're drawn out conversations on it.
If I was watching a Movie and was waiting to talk to someone I could just keep my PSP on and for them to sign on. Then send them the message. An AIM with just a incomming message logger would be better then nothing atleast then it would be the exact thing as having a pager. I am damn good at typen words on the PSP and if it has an on-screen keyboard its easy as hell. If I could program I would make it myself but guess what... An no I don't plan on learning how anytime soon thats not my profession. If someone did make it. It could be done like the infared homebrew program has been done the way each button makes a panel slide out from the side of the screen... One for buddy list One for a tabbed message box and the other for an onscreen keyboard. It doesn't matter how much you do or do not like it. You all say if I wanted to use AIM I would use my computer. Well you could also say if you wanted to use most of the homebrew apps that have been made on the PSP. You could use them better on the computer also. Its really not the point of this post. It's just you're personal opinion. |

Jeez, If you think this is a dumb Idea then you have atleast 1500 people against you.
Thats all that the WebAIM servers hold and they stay full. I have only managed to get on it once in my life. Sure if I paid $4 a month I could get on anytime, but all it is just a HTML version of AIM... It loggs incomming messages from each person and you just reply to which ever message and delete them at you're convience. Only part makes it better then a regular homebrew app would be the fact they keep you signed in where if you leave you're hot spot you can still recieve you're messages for when you get back to the hot spot. I just don't want to spend money on something that should be free or cost ALOT less sure $4 ain't much but it adds up with the rest of the bills for thoes of you who actually have the responcibilitys of bills. |

Well, if you all need that program so badly (useless, IMO), why not make it yourself? This is a forum for speculation, not whining about programs that you want...
