Default Hawks PSP Mod, VU display,Rumble and More

Heya Peeps

Version 1 Died due to wires braking,

here's version 2

I have since added sound reactive Yellow leds under each button pad.

the rumble is from a Samsung Phone connected to the VU chip Via a transistor.

I will post a LED VU installation guide here if anyone is interested..

For anyone wanting to attempt this i have put this together.
if you dont understand part of it just let me know and ill try elaborate and edit this first post.

Time:-This mod in total took me about 7 hrs

Tools Required:- Fine tipped soldering iron, Dremmel, Hot Glue Gun, lots of Patience

I have only done this mod sucessfully on psp 2000's with white case as it is Translucent enough for the light to be seen without drilling through.

other cases require you to drill holes where the leds are placed.

Parts Required

VU Mod:- LB1443N, pnp transistor, 10k potentiometer, 10k resistor, SMD Leds
Rumble Mod:- rumble motor, pnp transistor

Get some 0.3mm copper wire OR a piece of very thin copper strip, and solder your smd leds ( positive end ) on to it evenly spaced.
now use the 0.2mm wire and connect them together as the red lines show.
also solder a wire to the copper strip.

If you try use any thicker wire here you will struggle to get the psp cover back on.

now take the psp front and dremmel out enough plastic so the leds sit in holes and leave the copper strip flush.

Notice all the wires running out of the top left.

Now get your hot glue gun and run it down the whole strip. 1. to keep it in place and 2. to stop the copper strip touching the screen back as the copper strip will be permanent Live.

Now strip the rest of your psp down to remove the main board.

place chip and potentiometer as in the picture ( rumble motor If Required )

OK Now go make a coffee and take a Brake.................

take a pnp transistor and wire as follows.

collector:- to chassis ( ground )
base:- to Power LED drive transistor ( See Pictures Below for location )
emitter:- to pin 5 on the VU chip

and place in space here....

now run a wire from Battery positive to pin 9 on the VU chip.

connect the 10k resistor across pins 5 and 7 of the VU chip

connect pin 8 of the VU chip to wiper of the 10k potentiometer.

connect one side of the 10k potentiometer to ground and connect the other side to the right hand pad of the right hand speaker.

now connect LEDs as follows:--

RUMBLE MOD:- connect pnp transistor as follows

collector:- pin 9 of VU chip
emmiter:- positive wire of rumble motor
base:- to resistor ( value dependent on pnp transistor type )
resistor to pin 4 or 6 of the VU chip
rumble motor negative to Chassis ( Ground )

Data sheet for the VU chip can be found here

http://www.leeds-laptop-repairs.co.u.../datasheet.pdf

Good luck

Hawk

I would be interested in a tutorial. Also if you could post links to where you can buy most of the stuff that would be awesome. I'd really like something like this for my PSP, make it unique and different from my friends PSPs. Also around how much would something like this cost in total?

nice mod. Can you post a simple circuit diagram because some pictures are a little hard to see. I am going to attempt this mod for my phat.

Oh can you post the tpye (with number) of your transistors of the one you used along with circuit diagram? or does it not matter?

Also is the potiental meter absolutely essential/ what does it adjust? because the ones i can get at my local electronics store are pretty big?(ill try find smaller ones)

*edit Whats the green thing?

hi m8 the green thingy is a potentiometer, the transistor is a PNP pn2907a.

no the pot is not essential but youll need to play around with resistor values.

look at the pdf link at the bottom of the tut there is a simple circuit at the bottom,

good luck

any q's feel free to ask

yeh they all work the same ( or there abouts )

if choosing go for a linear one it will make adjustment easier and a little less critical.

the adjustment strays as the battery voltage decreases. i found it work best if adjusted when the battery is about 85%

sorry m8.

i just had a phone here so took the hammer to it for the vibrator and blue smd led's, expecting it to be the usual weighted motor and found that instead.

it was a E330 phone and the vibrator lived in the lid.

BTW i experienced some strange vu issues with the rumble connected to it .. ive since removed it from the VU chip and im looking to connect it using another circuit.

ill post details of it when ive done it .

Hey im attempting this mod right now. I composed a diagram of what i can understand from the tut. Please let me know if it is incorrect ASAP as i only have a few days to complete it. Also what is the "power led drive transistor"? (is it just a "+" 5v connection?)

Vu Mod Diagram: img18.imageshack.us/i/vumoddiagram.jpg/

hi m8

these images dont exist ( or im doing something wrong )

the transistor i used was a PN2907a PNP switching transistor.

look forward to seeing your completed mod.

OHHHH lol i though you were soldering to a transistor on the psp not the base sorry my bad (my diagram will be wrong then at the transistor base) but can you still check it out anyway?

Thanks for keeping on with me

hi DC

the only problem i see is

drawing 1:- the common for the leds is + not ground

drawing 2:- Pins 4 and 6 linked, you only need to take a drive from pin 4.

i removed the rumble from the VU and reconnected it on its own transistor direct to the speaker output, it caused some strange things to happen to the VU lights..

ok so basically all i have to do is to link the positive common copper strip to pin 9 instead of pin 5? and the base and collector of the transistor to the same ground point? then i should be all set right

hi DC

the transistor base needs to go to the Power LED drive, easiest place i found is the SMD transistor on the main board just above the Power board socket.
