Default SnesTYL 0.2c Compatibility : What game? What setting? Answered!

The best SnesTYL Settings
(current version - 0.2c)

In order to set this up I had to decide what was most important when playing a SNES game on the PSP (using the latest SnesTYL emu). When making the settings for these games I decided that playability would have to be the priority (how well the games actually play or, this could also be defined as accuracy of emulation [with a minimum of ~55+ fps or better]) then secondly comes soundtrack and sound effect quality.

=======================
[Default Settings (used with every game below)]

GFX engine : PSP accel + accu Soft (or approx soft, but i like accu better)
Rendering : Zoom 4/3
Smoothing : On
Speed Limit : On
Video Sync : Off
CPU Clock : 333Mhz
=======================

=======================
Custom Settings - (These are the settings you channge per game)

Setting A+
Note: If a game fits under this category it runs close to perfect or flawlessly.
-Frequency : 44k
-Frameskip : 0

Setting A
Note: Automatic frameskipping can cause speed bursts.
-Frequency : 44k
-Frameskip : Auto

Setting B
Note: Games with this setting will run very solid
-Frequency : 44k
-Frameskip : 1

Setting C
Note: Automatic frameskipping can cause speed bursts.
-Frequency : 22k
-Frameskip : Auto

Setting D
Note: Preferred maximum frameskipping with lower quality sound to boost performance.
-Frequency : 22k
-Frameskip : 1

Setting E
Note: This is the "lowest" setting that I consider playable (low sound and high frameskipping)
-Frequency : 22k
-Frameskip : 2

Setting F
Note: These games do not run full speed, without diluting the game play with frameskipping

Setting X
Note: These games require emulator specific settings to be selected per game, and are specified in the description.
=======================

Legend:

###. [Best Setting] Game Name - Results

Onto the games...
  1. [E] 1st Samurai - This game runs at ~51fps at the best setting. Somewhat playable altho there is consistant slowdown.
  2. [B] 3 Ninjas Strike Back - This game runs great, solid @ 60fps. Major lag during some loading screens.

  4. [B] ABC Monday Night Footbal - Somewhat choppy due to the 2 frameskip, gameplay is still around ~48-51 fps, so not that playable.
  5. [A+] Act Raiser - Plays great without any adjustments.
  6. [C] Act Raiser 2 - Plays great with 22 khz sound and 0 or auto fps skip.
  7. [A+] Adams Family - This game plays very well, easy 60fps but there is some graphic shifting near the bottom of the screen.
  8. [F] Adams Family - Pugslys Scavenger Hunt - Runs decently but there is major lag on some levels.
  9. [A+] Adams Family Values - Runs very decently.
  10. [E] Adventures of Dr. Frankenstien - Some video skipping is required.
  11. [B] Adventures of Kid Kleats - Plays pretty well with this setting ~60fps.
  12. [A+] Adventures of Rockey & Bullwinkle - Plays great, no slowdown.
  13. [E] Aero Fighter - Plays great without tweaks until enemys come onscreen. This is the recommended setting (altho its hard to play shooters with frameskipping)
  14. [A+] Aero the Acro-bat - Plays great without tweaks.
  15. [E] Aero the Acro-bat 2 - Needs 22khz and 2 frameskip to run properly.
  16. [E] Aerobiz Supersonic - Needs 22khz and 2 frameskip to run properly.
  17. [E] Air Calvary - Runs pretty well with this setting.
  18. [E] Air Strike Patrol - The text during loading, but this game ran at 60fps with this setting.
  19. [B] Ahhhhh! Real Monsters - Not too bad, some choppyness due to the 2 frameskip, but rather playable.
  20. [B] Aladdin - Pretty accurate, minimal flickering, plays ~50-55 fps
  21. [B] Alfred Chicken - Pretty accurate, plays at 60fps with only 1 frameskip and 44khz audio
  22. [B] Alien 3 - Pretty accurate, plays at 60fps with only 1 frameskip and 44khz audio

  25. [A+] Arcade Greatest Hits - Runs very well (menu has a bit of lag)
  26. [A+] Arcana - Runs pretty well, minor lag in some dungeons but pretty good overall.
  27. [B] Arkanoid - Runs very well, lag only during loading screens.
  28. [F] Art of Fighting - Runs about 40 fps, I consider this game unplayable.
  29. [F] Art of Fighting - Runs about 40 fps, I consider this game unplayable.

  33. [A+] Barbie Super Model - Plays full speed.
  34. [E] Barbie's Vacation Adventure - Plays pretty well with this setting.
  35. [D] Barkley's Shut up and Jam - Plays very fast with this setting.
  36. [A] Bass Fishing - Pretty accurate without skipping but with 1 frameskip and 44khz sound you will be getting ~60 fps.
  37. [B] Bassins Black Bass - Got 60fps with 44khz and only 1 frameskip.
  38. [E] Batman and Robin - Got 60fps with 22khz and 2 frameskip.
  39. [A+] Batman Forever - Got awesome speeds with this one out the gate. You might want to consider using 1 frameskip if you see any lag.
  40. [E] Batman Returns - This one I would consider non playable. Only could get ~50 fps tops with 22khz and 2 frameskip
  41. [B] Batman Revenge of the Joker - This one runs 55 fps without frameskip, but a frameskip of 1 gives you a solid 60 fps.
  42. [E] Battle Grand Prix - This one runs at ~60 fps with 22khz sound and 2 frameskip
  43. [A+] Battletoad Double Dragon - This game runs perfect without any frameskipping or lowering the sound quality.
  44. [A+] Bazooka Blitzkrieg - The games loads at full speed, but unless we get a superscope for psp, we won't be playing this game anytime soon.

  46. [A] Battletoads: Battlemaniacs - Works excellent, very fast and accurate, minimal slowdown
  47. [C] Blazing Skies - This one was trouble. Using lower sound quality and frameskipping to achive a playable gamestate.
  48. [C] Breath of Fire - Runs decently with this setting but not full speed. Lag especially during battles.
  49. [C] Breath of First II - Runs a bit slower then BOF, around ~46-50 fps
  50. [E] Bubble Bobble - Runs well on this setting, frameskipping doesn't effect this game much.
  51. [A] Beauty and the Beast - Runs at 60fps or ~55 without frameskip

  61. [B] Chrono Trigger - This game rums decently with this setting. Pretty smooth, some scenes have a tiny bit of lag.
  62. [E] D-Force - This game runs well with this setting (keeps up when there are lots of enemys on the screen)
  63. [A+] Darius Twin - This game plays perfect without any tweaks!
  64. [E] Donkey Kong Country - This plays at 51 fps with it on 44k or 22k
  65. [B] Donkey Kong Country 2 - Plays at a pretty solid 60 fps with this setting
  66. [B] Donkey Kong Country 3 - Plays at 60 fps when in-game, but on the world map ~50 fps
  67. [E] Earthworm Jim - This is a great game, unfortunately I couldn't get 55+ fps without a frameskip of 2
  68. [B] Earthworm Jim 2 - Hits full speed with only a single frameskip and 44khz sound!
  69. [D] Evo - Plays at ~58 fps with this setting, there seems to be a glitch with the water on the bottom.
  70. [F] F-zero - So sad, this game has problems getting up to the 50 fps mark. I don't consider this game playable yet.
  71. [E] Final Fantasy 2 - Plays at about ~60 fps with these settings

  78. [B] Lufia - Plays at 60 fps on map and in game, lag during loading screens
  79. [B] Lufia 2 - Plays at 60 fps with only 1 frameskip. Pretty fluid gameplay.
  80. [E] Megaman 7 - This game shows some sign of lag and is only playable with low quality sound and a frameskip of 2.
  81. [C] Megaman 9 - This game runs almost perfect with the best setting, but 22khz sound makes it run flawlessly.
  82. [C] Megaman X - This game runs almost perfect with the best setting until enemys come onscreen, but 22khz sound with 1 frameskip does the trick.
  83. [X] Megaman X3 - I tried this game and nothing I could do would get it playing at an acceptable speed. Then I tried PSP accellerated with 22khz audio and 1 frameskip and MMX3 was playing at 56-60fps
  84. [A+] Mickey Mania - This game plays flawlessly with 44khz audio and no frameskipping!
  85. [B] Mystical Ninja - This game plays almost perfectly without tweaking but with 44khz and 1 frameskip its playing at a very solid 60fps
  86. [A+] NBA JAM - The arcade classic, playing perfectly on your PSP Snes emu (lag during loading screen / 1/2 time)
  87. [F] Ogre Tactics - I could not get this game to run over 35 fps. I would not consider this game playable. altho if you are a fan it might be worth trying.

  89. [B] R-Type 3 - This game runs excellent with 1 frameskip.
  90. [B] Secret of Evermore - Runs at a solid 58 fps with this setting, almost works with 44khz 1 frameskip.
  91. [B] Secret of Mana - Runs great with this setting, altho minor lag during some loading scenes or with many characters on screen.
  92. [B] Simpsons - Barts Nightmare - Runs perfect with this setting.
  93. [B] Spiderman and the X-Men - Runs perfect with this setting.
  94. [F] Star Fox - Intro played at 20-35 fps with the lowest setting. The actual game would not play with any setting available.
  95. [E] Street Fighter Alpha 3 - Gameplay is about ~54 fps with this setting altho it definately felt slower. Lag during "fight" and win/lose loading screen.
  96. [D] Super Ghouls and Ghosts - Played very solid between 56-60 fps with this setting.
  97. [B] Super Mario All-Stars - Played very solid at 60 fps with this setting. There was minor shifting on the bottom of the screen sometimes.
  98. [F] Super Mario Kart - This game is extremely laggy, ran around 35-40 at the best for me. I consider this game unplayable currently.
  99. [A+] Super Mario World - This game runs perfectly without any tweaks!
  100. [F] Super Mario World 2 - This game is extremely laggy, ran around 35-40 at the best for me. I consider this game unplayable currently.

  107. [B] Tetris & Dr. Mario - This game plays at a solid 60 fps with 1 frameskip.
  108. [E] Wolfenstein 3D - This game plays at 51 fps solid, but is still rather slow.
=======================

I will continue to update this list as much as I can. Let me know if you like these settings and if theres a better setting that I should know about, post it in this thread (so I can check it against mine) Thanks!

(my original thread here) I realized that this is the correct forum for "emu settings".
(FYI - mods I will continue to update both, unless you would like it in one specific location)

I have only one suggestion for this topic, why are some considered unplayable at 40+ fps?! Is it because they need that full 60fps to make it feel like the real speed of it? and that it just feels 'too laggy' otherwise?

Since the SnesTYL emulator has extremely good compatability, I felt that the the only thing left holding the emulator back was speed issues. So based on that, I decided that a game being playable relys on the comparison to its console counterpart. (in reguards to speed/sound)

Being a tough judge, I pushed the most out of this emulator that I could while making sure to keep the original gameplay intact. I personally do play games if they only max out at ~40 fps, however there were many complaints about speed issues and I wanted to address that directly. I could be wrong but many of us here are also pc gamers? Every day online (in game) i hear people complaining about lag, and would equate poor speed to lag, especially in shooters.

If a game plays at 40 fps and is listed as being "unplayable" then i felt that the slowdown affected the game's speed (and in rare cases music) to the extent where I would either lose interest or pick another game instead of continue playing. (unless it was one of my favorites)

Technically there is no Megaman 9. Megaman & Bass is officially considered a side story. I personally don't care, but I've seen some people get really pissed off at people who do that.

I love this thread!

May I ask, why favor sound quality over screen smoothness? For example, when a game is 44Khz/Frameskip 1 -- would that game run as well if the sound was 22Khz/Frameskip 0? Given the headphone quality and/or crappy psp speakers, think it makes a difference?

got a bit od an update, Seiken Densetsu 3 (secret of mana 2) runs pretty crappy on any setting config i can come up with. guess i have to wait for a new emulator version before i can play it above 15fps

EDIT - ok i got it running pretty smooth but the music is around 1/2 - 3/4 normal speed which is annoying since the music is amazing, but i guess cuz of how complicated the game is im lucky i got it running this good.

Sound - on @ 22khz
GFX engine - psp accel. +accu soft
Frameskip - 0
Render PAL as NTSC - off
Smoothing - on
Speed Limit - on
VSync - off
CPU Clock - 333mhz

hope that helps for those who want to play the game. i find it quite humorious that the psp can run full on 3d graphics that are just **** amazing, yet it screams when you try to play a SNES game without the right settings. we can only hope that someone comes up with a method of at least doubling the speed at which games are run. perhaps the gpu can be used for something unlike normal emulators? just a thought

Can someone do a quick post of explainations to each of the settings by them just so we all know exactly what each one means if possible?

Like so:

CPU Clock - Determines the speed the CPU clock is running at.

For each one.

Also do translated versions of Super Famicom games run ok on the PSP?

Cheers

Thats never happened to me, and I`ve loaded it up at least 10 times already...

Mines super slow no matter what setting I have it on. Does your run decent?

I`ve got it on:

Sound: 11khz
GFX Engine: PSP accel+accu Soft
Frameskip: 9
Rendering: Full
Smoothing: On
Speed Limit: On
Video Sync: Off
CPU Clock: 333

It freezes for a sec every 5 seconds, the music is too fast/too slow depending on where you are, and its mad choppy. Any help?

@modcase(topic): I dont know how youre coming up with those results. ALL my snes roms are running around 51/52fps, all the games that are running perfect on your psp, as you say. For example Super Mario World. Runs at 52fps average, maybe lower.

My config (tyl 0.2c):
333MhZ
22KhZ sound
psp accel+accu soft
rendering zoom fit
smoothing on
speed limit on

I dont know why your psp runs faster....I really dont know why none of my games plays faster than 52fps.....

The basic rule as I find it is:
If it uses lots of sprites or mode seven, then it will not run.

Try playing F-zero or Pocky and Rocky 2.
It is truly hell.

This is the best and fastest emulator out to date right?.

From what games i tried at my friends PSP.
It seems to play games pretty well.

Though i noticed in some

That when the screen had alot of things going on.
The game would slow down drastically.

Is the current release the last one, or will the author of the port be working on improving speed issues.

I had the CPU clocked to 333 just so you know.

Yes, this is the fastest emu for snes to date.
But, if you choose to wait patiently, in 2 weeks or so, the new and most likely much improved emulator will be released.
Look forward to it.
